Alien: Covenant

One of the strongest franchises out there has been the ALIEN franchise, a lot of ups, a few downs, but for the most part a franchise that we have all loved. The future of the franchise had been up in the air for a while with a few different products in the works. After Prometheus which was met with mixed reviews, Neil Blomkamp was working on an “Alien 5” that would actually take place right after ALIENS, but then it happened. Ridley Scott made The Martian, and he was back in our good graces. Which lead to, Alien: Covenant.

Alien: Covenant stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Carmen Ejogo and Demián Bichir, and follows the crew of the colony ship Covenant, headed for a remote planet in deep space to start up a new colony. After a random unexplained explosion wakes up the crew early they find a new planet closer with the same specs they are looking for. Deciding not to go back into hyper sleep they land on this new planet to check it out. While there, they meet David (Fassbender), the synthetic survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition. Soon the would be paradise turns dark and dangerous when a hostile life-form forces the crew into a deadly fight for survival.

The film definitely blends together Prometheus and Alien. However not always in the best of ways. But before I go Negative let’s look at a few positives. Most notably, as with most Ridley Scott films, this one is absolutely beautiful. The set pieces and cinematography are incredibly stunning. From the opening 20th Century Fox logo to the closing credits it is just breathtaking visuals. Something that Scott has always been amazing at. As well the Alien is creepy as all hell. Some of the beast work they have ever done on the Xenomorph.

The cast is pretty serviceable. For the most part they are the generic disposable characters you would expect to see in an Alien film. However, there are a few breakouts. Michael Fassbender, obviously. Fassbender reprises his role as David from Prometheus, as well as plays the updated model of David named Walter. He does an incredible job distinguishing the two androids, yet still giving them personality. There is a scene between the two that is probably the best scene in the film. Danny McBride is the other stand out. And I was worried going into this that he would actually take me out of the film. However, he does an incredible job here, and is actually one the best most fleshed out characters in the film.

Like I said the cast other than those two is pretty basic and just serviceable. I would have liked a lot more to the cast rather than looking at them and just knowing they would all be expendable. James Franco stood out more than rest of the cast, and he is barely in the film. No one is really given any kind of an arc; they attempt to make it feel like the characters are growing, but the attempt falls flat.

The story itself is very slow. While film is in fact a true sequel to Prometheus, and a true prequel to Alien, it is also neither of them. While there is no real answers to a the questions left from Prometheus, there is also no clear set up to Alien, yet you still feel the like you are watch the sequel and prequel to both films. I assume because of the lackluster reception to Prometheus is why they went the route they did to move forward and make a true Alien film. However that leaves a lot of plot holes and questions. Also while it feels very much like an Alien film, there is a surprising lack of Alien in the film.

All in all Alien Covenant is an acceptable film. A little long and a little slow, with lack luster characters, but at the same time, some incredible visions, a few great performances, and a few amazingly intense scenes. Alien: Covenant prolyl ranks 3rd in my list of Alien Films, and I am giving it a Jeebus Score of 3.3. But what say you Jackass Nation? Have you seen Alien Covenant? What did you think? What is your favorite of the Alien franchise? Sound off in the comments below! And remember, It Is What It Is!

The Jeebus Score explained

The Jeebus score is out of a possible 5 points with a .5 bonus. Films are giving a max of 1 point each for Entertainment Value, Story/Writing, Performance, Direction, and Production. There is also a possible bonus up to .5. Any film between 2.5 and 4 is considered a good film. 4-5 is a great film. Anything over 5 is an incredibly amazing film. To get a perfect score of 5.5 a film will pretty much have to be The Empire Strikes Back or The Godfather.

The Frickin Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2

Ooga Chaka Ooga Chaka Ooga Chaka, I can’t stop this feeling, deep inside of me! Girl you know I’m ready for, the Guardiaaaaans! Guardians Of The Galaxy was my number one most anticipated film of 2014. I had no idea what to expect and it was Marvel’s biggest gamble at the time. Could they take this obscure comic and make the general movie goer audiences by in to it. Over 700 million dollars later, I think they found a way to do so.

Vol 2 has been a film I have been super excited for. Could not wait to see where they take these characters. Returning to the franchise is Vol 1 director James Gunn bringing back his rag tag group of guardians that include Star-Lord Peter Quill, played by Chris Pratt, Gamora played by Zoe Saldana, Drax played by Batista, and the duo of Rocket Raccoon and Groot voiced by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel respectively. Returning from the first film we have Karen Gillian as Nebula and Michael Rooker as Yondu. This go around the Guardians are being forced to look at Peter Quills lineage as Kurt Russel joins the cast as Star Lords father, Ego the living planet.

I will be pretty vague with the story because there wasn’t much known going into the film, and I want you to have the same experience as I am not really knowing where the story goes, but basically, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2′ continues the team’s adventures as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage.

For the most part Vol 2 is fun and exciting. It is an entertaining ride from start to finish. The marketing department really got the trailers right, they literally only showed us scenes from the opening 20 minutes mostly. The chemistry in this cast is incredible and it is fun to once again be with this family. Everyone takes their characters and dials them up a little. Batista’s Drax is an obviously stand out once again. Think about what you have seen in the trailers, and double it.

I was very worried that Baby Groot would become entirely played out early on. Before I even saw the film I was already almost too tired of Baby Groot. However, they do an incredible job of making you totally forget the overabundance of Baby Groot from the media and marketing department and right from the opening credits you fall in love with him all over again. Sean Gunn as well is incredible reprising his role from the first film.

Unfortunately it is not all great. Most notably the soundtrack is nowhere near as strong as the original. However that is a hard task to have had accomplished seeing as Vol 1 might have been the greatest soundtrack ever put together. So we can’t really fault them for that. What I do fault them for was a very generic and clichéd story. When you really get into what the plot of the movie is they go through some very basic storytelling plot points. It becomes incredibly predictable. As well the emotional beats are incredibly forced and clichéd. It’s like James Gunn said ok guys this is the part you will have the feels” and it’s not really deserved so it doesn’t play off as it should. The film is beautifully shot and the cinematography is amazing. The action sets are incredible, and for the most part the action is well shot. There were maybe 2 or 3 too many slow motion scenes though. James Gunn might have over done it a bit there.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2. Is overall a fun and excited addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it doesn’t do much to further the universe on a whole, you get the feeling the effects of this film will be felt within the MCU. Everyone is great in the roles; it is entertaining and leaves you wanting more. I scored the film a 3.3, with a Jeebus Bonus of .3 for both Baby Groot, and the feels that it can give you. That gives us a Jeebus Score of 3.6. So what say you Jackass Nation? Are you excited for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2? Who is your favorite of the Guardians? Sound off in the comments below! And remember, It Is What It Is!

Get Out

Every August I begin my horror movie marathon. Where I watch over 90 horror films that I own. It is roughly three months of me being terrified. Outside of that marathon I am not much of a horror movie watcher. So nine times out of ten, I don’t go see the new horror films.  But with such hype and excitement around Get Out I decided I could not miss this one.

Get Out is the directorial debut of Jordan Peele of Key and Peele fame. The film stars Daniel Kaluuya, Catherine Keener, Allison Williams, Bradley Whitford and Caleb Landry Jones, and follows a young interracial couple who visit the mysterious estate of the girl’s parents.

First off, I am going to tell you right now, after seeing this movie, I have made the conscience decision to never, ever, ever, meet another girls parents. Ever. I am out. I got out. Out. Because this is absolutely creepy as hell, and incredible to watch! And I totally get the name, because all movie long I was screaming, “Bro! Get Out!” Jordan Peele has legit had his coming out party to the world of directing.

Everyone in the film is incredible. Most notably Daniel Kaluuya in the starring role. This guy is talented, and cannot wait to see where he goes next! Allison Williams is also great, and will definitely be a lock for next years That Bitch Cray in the Jeebus Awards! They had such great chemistry together, that it added to the creepiness of the overall film. It was also awesome to see Banshee in another film. Caleb Landry Jones is a great actor, and I love when he pops up in the films.

While Kaluuya is a break out of the film, he is definitely not the only break out. Lil Rel Howery is incredible. In a horror film, there’s not normally the comedic relief, or at least a large part being the comedic relief. But Howery was really good, and extremely funny. He serves as the audiences surrogate into his world, and pretty much says what’s on our mind. Not to mention that even though this could have taken you out of the film, the comedy fit perfectly.

Peele did a great job mixing the horror and suspense with a little sprinkle of comedy that gave you enough to relax. I am very excited to see what he does next. As far as this goes, Get Out is incredible. I am giving it a Jeebus Score of 3.5! Are you excited about seeing Get Out this weekend? Any terrible stories meeting your significant others parents? Sound off in the comments below! And remember, It Is What It Is!

Everything Batman is still Awesome

Everything was awesome back when The Lego Movie hit theaters in 2014. When the announcement was first made that a movie was being made based on the Lego Brand, most were pretty skeptical. It wasn’t until the first reviews started coming out that people began to by in. Almost immediately it became a hit. It is a film that I truly believe was snubbed by the Academy Awards, not getting a nomination. Not only did The Lego Movie deserve a nomination, I contend that it deserved to win.

Off all the greatness that was The Lego Movie, one of the breakout characters was definitely Will Arnett’s Batman. He was incredible! Arguably one of the best on screen Batmen we have ever gotten! From Will Arnett’s voice work, down to the characters persona, he was a great. It didn’t take long for WB to announce The Lego Batman spinoff. This worried me. Was this character the way they wrote it able to carry his own film? Aside from the recent Nolan Films, and the original 1989 take on Batman, WB has had a bit of trouble getting The Batman to work. Well, The Lego Batman works. Works so well that it might be one of the best Batman films we have ever gotten.

The Lego Batman Movie is directed by Chris McKay, and written by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. It stars Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Zach Galifianakis, Rosario Dawson, and Ralph Fiennes. With Mariah Carey, Jenny Slate, Billy Dee Williams, Hector Elizondo, Conan O’Brian, Jason Mantzoukas, Doug Benson, Zoe Kravitz, Kate Micucci, Riki Lindhome, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Adam DeVine, Eddie Izzard, Seth Green, Jemaine Clement, Ellie Kemper, and Chris Hardwick.  Seriously, that is the cast list. Most of them have small one liners or so, but still one hell of a cast.

The film follows Arnett’s Batman as he is the loner hero in Gotham city. After he takes down and saves Gotham for the millionth time The Joker (Zalifianakis) realizes that Batman doesn’t appreciate their rivalry and decided he has to show Batman that he needs him. Thus sending Batman on a journey to come to peace with the fact that he is lonely, and he needs people in his life, and that he can’t do everything alone.

First off, the film does what The Lego Movie did so well by mixing a tremendous amount of heart with a fun ride.  They are almost on Pixar level with their emotions, not to the point that The Lego Movies are going to make you cry, but they definitely hit you with the feels. You can relate to the characters despite the outlandish and over the top attitudes and characterizations. The Story itself is a basic story, but they play it out so well that feels special and different.

On top of all the feels and emotions, this film is funny. I literally walked out, and my face was hurting from laughing and smiling so much. There are not a lot of downtimes in the film. They pretty much hit you hard with the jokes as the film begins, even before the studio logo’s even hit. Then they don’t really slow down. There may be a small stretch in the middle where the film kind of loses its footing drags for a moment, but it quickly catches itself back up and keeps hitting. It never ceases to be funny.

The animation is once again beautiful. I love this near stop motion look that Lego films are giving us. They use a lot of dark colors, seeing as Batman only deals in black and sometimes very very very dark grey. So with the colors they use for Batman, the Bat Cave, and Gotham city, they mix perfectly with the few bright colors that really pop as well. This animation is absolutely incredible!

Like I said this cast is absolutely incredible. Even as a few are just cameos and maybe one liners or so. But everyone fits their voice perfectly, and does a great job to bring these characters to life. Will Arnett has a great grasp on this characters voice. I hesitate to call him one of the best Batmen of time, but he does rival some of the greats. Galifianakis’ Joker is a very good Joker. Not up to the level of Mark Hamill, but still a good rendition of the clown prince of crime. Hearing Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill return for minor cameos as Superman and Green Lantern had me rolling, just having those two voice these guys is great.

As for negatives, like I said the film does have a little bit of a down time in the second act, it wasn’t too slow to really take you out, and they continued to hit you with jokes so it still flowed. While we are on the concept of the jokes, they are all hilarious, and for the most part completely hit. The Problem with the jokes are that they come so quick, so fast, that you are still laughing at 2 jokes before trying to catch up with the one you are on.

All in all The Lego Batman Movie is great! From the cast to the animation everything in this film is on point. They do a great job at poking fun of the history and lore of Batman. From BvS, to the Nolan Verse, to Schumacher and Adam West. There is even a brief joke about the 1940s Black and White serial. They even hit on the suicide squad and Marvel! The music is once again fun and catchy, not as catchy as Everything Is Awesome, but still great!

It’s a film that can hit all ages! Kids and adults alike. I gave it a score of 3.7, definitely one you are going to want to go out and see as soon as you can. I’d also give it a .5 bonus if I could for the jokes on the nostalgia as well as the awesome cameos! Great cast, great animation, all an all-around heartfelt joy to watch, that you’ll want to see over and over again, even if just to catch the jokes you missed! Are you excited for The Lego Batman Movie? Who is your favorite Batman? Sound off in the comments below! And remember, It Is What It Is!
