Get Out

Every August I begin my horror movie marathon. Where I watch over 90 horror films that I own. It is roughly three months of me being terrified. Outside of that marathon I am not much of a horror movie watcher. So nine times out of ten, I don’t go see the new horror films.  But with such hype and excitement around Get Out I decided I could not miss this one.

Get Out is the directorial debut of Jordan Peele of Key and Peele fame. The film stars Daniel Kaluuya, Catherine Keener, Allison Williams, Bradley Whitford and Caleb Landry Jones, and follows a young interracial couple who visit the mysterious estate of the girl’s parents.

First off, I am going to tell you right now, after seeing this movie, I have made the conscience decision to never, ever, ever, meet another girls parents. Ever. I am out. I got out. Out. Because this is absolutely creepy as hell, and incredible to watch! And I totally get the name, because all movie long I was screaming, “Bro! Get Out!” Jordan Peele has legit had his coming out party to the world of directing.

Everyone in the film is incredible. Most notably Daniel Kaluuya in the starring role. This guy is talented, and cannot wait to see where he goes next! Allison Williams is also great, and will definitely be a lock for next years That Bitch Cray in the Jeebus Awards! They had such great chemistry together, that it added to the creepiness of the overall film. It was also awesome to see Banshee in another film. Caleb Landry Jones is a great actor, and I love when he pops up in the films.

While Kaluuya is a break out of the film, he is definitely not the only break out. Lil Rel Howery is incredible. In a horror film, there’s not normally the comedic relief, or at least a large part being the comedic relief. But Howery was really good, and extremely funny. He serves as the audiences surrogate into his world, and pretty much says what’s on our mind. Not to mention that even though this could have taken you out of the film, the comedy fit perfectly.

Peele did a great job mixing the horror and suspense with a little sprinkle of comedy that gave you enough to relax. I am very excited to see what he does next. As far as this goes, Get Out is incredible. I am giving it a Jeebus Score of 3.5! Are you excited about seeing Get Out this weekend? Any terrible stories meeting your significant others parents? Sound off in the comments below! And remember, It Is What It Is!

The Jeebus Score explained

The Jeebus score is out of a possible 5 points with a .5 bonus. Films are giving a max of 1 point each for Entertainment Value, Story/Writing, Performance, Direction, and Production. There is also a possible bonus up to .5. Any film between 2.5 and 4 is considered a good film. 4-5 is a great film. Anything over 5 is an incredibly amazing film. To get a perfect score of 5.5 a film will pretty much have to be The Empire Strikes Back or The Godfather.

Logan

The X-men franchise has been running strong since its first film helped resurrected the superhero genre back in 2000. When it was first announced that Hugh Jackman, a relative unknown, standing in well higher then then historic Wolverine at 6’2” audiences were rather annoyed. Fast forward 17 years, he is probably the most iconic superhero on film. When it was announced that Logan would be his final appearance, audiences’ had a new reason to be annoyed. We cannot see anyone play the face of the X-Men other than Hugh Jackman. However after 17 years, and 9 appearances, I think he has earned his retirement. Luckily, he has given us the Wolverine film we deserve to say goodbye too.

Logan once again stars Hugh Jackman as The Wolverine, and reunites him with Patrick Stewart as Professor X. It also stars Dafne Keen, Boyd Holbrook, and Stephen Merchant. James Mangold once again takes up the director’s seat, pulling together a script that he wrote along with Scott Frank.

The story takes place in the year 2029. Years after nearly all mutants have been wiped out.  All that we know is that Logan spends his time as a limo driver, while caring for an ailing Charles Xavier on the border of Texas and Mexico. When a woman brings a small girl to him looking for the mutant once called Wolverine, he tries to go on the run, only to find out that he is more connected to this child then he ever thought. Logan whose powers are beginning to fade must make sure this girl is safe from the forces that are hunting.

The film is incredible. This is not only the Wolverine film we have always wanted, but it is the Wolverine film we deserve. If this truly is the final time we ever get Jackman as The Wolverine, then Logan is also the perfect sendoff. It is gritty, and violent, and vicious. In the past the Wolverine solo films had always had their issues, whether it be sowing Deadpool’s mouth shut, or getting entirely too cartoony at the end. This go around the film stays true to its roots. It is grounded in reality as much as it can be, and never strays from that.

The cast is incredible. Holbrook might be my favorite X-Men villain next to Magneto. He is so slimy and perfect for the film and story they are building. He brings a perfect amount of shadiness, and evil to a great character that I don’t even know if he is a comic book character.  But he is perfect rival to be hunting down the last of the mutants against Wolverine. Patrick Stewart is amazing as always. Where they take the character of Charles Xavier in this film is unbelievable. Where Deadpool began the talk of more comic book films becoming more of a contender for the Academy Awards, Patrick Stewart is tipping that scale even more.

Dafne Keen is a relative newcomer, I don’t really know if she has been in anything else I haven’t seen her if she has. But man is she incredible in this role. The character is so deep and she is so good in the role, especially for having very few lines. But her delivery is so perfect. Where I say that Patrick Stewart deserves a little bit of Oscar talk all though it is incredibly early, I believe she does too.  This girl is going to be a star, and I feel that we could take this character with Keen in the role and really run with it. She is the perfect way to keep the “Wolverine” character going.

Make no mistake about it; Wolverine is an important character to the X-Men Role. If X-23 is going to continue the “Wolverine” role in future X Films, that would be the way to go. Recasting the role of Wolverine with someone other than Hugh Jackman is definitely a no go. Jackman has given us the definitive Wolverine, and this is the perfect sendoff if it truly is his last run. He is so incredible in the role, that I even believe he could be a contender for an award. That’s right, 3 actors and actress this early on in the year that I think deserve a look from the Academy. That’s how good this film is.

The film takes a lot of risks. Being Rated R, based on a character that is very crucial to the X-Men franchise could alienate a lot of the audience. However, it is done so well that I think it truly warranted the R Rating. It is not gore just for gore sake. It is not expendables. It is not an F-bomb because “oh well we got an r rating so let’s say it over and over”. No every bloody attack, ever F-Bomb is felt and needed for the narrative. It adds to the characters and story.

The only true negative I will give this film is there a small narrative choice made with X23 as the third act begins that I wasn’t too in and for a moment took me out of the film, but it was able to pull me back in fairly easy. Also I cannot get into it too much due to it almost being a spoiler territory, but there are two villains. One that over see’s Holbrook’s character portrayed by Richard E. Grant. And while Holbrook’s character is a little underutilized or developed, his portrayal saves the character, and then Richard E. Grant’s character does not really give us anything. But other than that the film truly has it all. It has laughs, emotions, excitement, and intense gritty action. There are even moments that bring tears to your eyes.

Over all Logan is an incredible film. With an amazing cast and an incredible story, Logan gives us an end to a near two decade saga that we have grown with and enjoyed. The story of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will forever be remembered. And this will easily be remembered not only as one of the greatest X-Men films, but as one of the greatest superhero films.  I am giving it a score of 4.0

In an era where we have begun to expect more from our comic book films, Logan truly delivers. A deep story, with intense violent action. It is new ground that Fox is breaking with the rated R super hero genre. With Deadpool and now Logan, they are ushering in a new wave of superheroes that we are able to enjoy on more than a “so bad it’s good” level like we have dealt with before. So I am giving LOGAN a score of 4.0, with a bonus of a full .5 for Keen’s performance as X23, the bloody use of Wolverine we have always wanted, and best sendoff we could ask for for Hugh Jackman. That gives us a Jeebus score of 4.5. But what about you Jackass Nation. Are you excited for Hugh Jackman’s alleged final go as The Wolverine in Logan? What is you favorite memory of the character? Everything Batman is still Awesome

Everything was awesome back when The Lego Movie hit theaters in 2014. When the announcement was first made that a movie was being made based on the Lego Brand, most were pretty skeptical. It wasn’t until the first reviews started coming out that people began to by in. Almost immediately it became a hit. It is a film that I truly believe was snubbed by the Academy Awards, not getting a nomination. Not only did The Lego Movie deserve a nomination, I contend that it deserved to win.

Off all the greatness that was The Lego Movie, one of the breakout characters was definitely Will Arnett’s Batman. He was incredible! Arguably one of the best on screen Batmen we have ever gotten! From Will Arnett’s voice work, down to the characters persona, he was a great. It didn’t take long for WB to announce The Lego Batman spinoff. This worried me. Was this character the way they wrote it able to carry his own film? Aside from the recent Nolan Films, and the original 1989 take on Batman, WB has had a bit of trouble getting The Batman to work. Well, The Lego Batman works. Works so well that it might be one of the best Batman films we have ever gotten.

The Lego Batman Movie is directed by Chris McKay, and written by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. It stars Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Zach Galifianakis, Rosario Dawson, and Ralph Fiennes. With Mariah Carey, Jenny Slate, Billy Dee Williams, Hector Elizondo, Conan O’Brian, Jason Mantzoukas, Doug Benson, Zoe Kravitz, Kate Micucci, Riki Lindhome, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Adam DeVine, Eddie Izzard, Seth Green, Jemaine Clement, Ellie Kemper, and Chris Hardwick.  Seriously, that is the cast list. Most of them have small one liners or so, but still one hell of a cast.

The film follows Arnett’s Batman as he is the loner hero in Gotham city. After he takes down and saves Gotham for the millionth time The Joker (Zalifianakis) realizes that Batman doesn’t appreciate their rivalry and decided he has to show Batman that he needs him. Thus sending Batman on a journey to come to peace with the fact that he is lonely, and he needs people in his life, and that he can’t do everything alone.

First off, the film does what The Lego Movie did so well by mixing a tremendous amount of heart with a fun ride.  They are almost on Pixar level with their emotions, not to the point that The Lego Movies are going to make you cry, but they definitely hit you with the feels. You can relate to the characters despite the outlandish and over the top attitudes and characterizations. The Story itself is a basic story, but they play it out so well that feels special and different.

On top of all the feels and emotions, this film is funny. I literally walked out, and my face was hurting from laughing and smiling so much. There are not a lot of downtimes in the film. They pretty much hit you hard with the jokes as the film begins, even before the studio logo’s even hit. Then they don’t really slow down. There may be a small stretch in the middle where the film kind of loses its footing drags for a moment, but it quickly catches itself back up and keeps hitting. It never ceases to be funny.

The animation is once again beautiful. I love this near stop motion look that Lego films are giving us. They use a lot of dark colors, seeing as Batman only deals in black and sometimes very very very dark grey. So with the colors they use for Batman, the Bat Cave, and Gotham city, they mix perfectly with the few bright colors that really pop as well. This animation is absolutely incredible!

Like I said this cast is absolutely incredible. Even as a few are just cameos and maybe one liners or so. But everyone fits their voice perfectly, and does a great job to bring these characters to life. Will Arnett has a great grasp on this characters voice. I hesitate to call him one of the best Batmen of time, but he does rival some of the greats. Galifianakis’ Joker is a very good Joker. Not up to the level of Mark Hamill, but still a good rendition of the clown prince of crime. Hearing Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill return for minor cameos as Superman and Green Lantern had me rolling, just having those two voice these guys is great.

As for negatives, like I said the film does have a little bit of a down time in the second act, it wasn’t too slow to really take you out, and they continued to hit you with jokes so it still flowed. While we are on the concept of the jokes, they are all hilarious, and for the most part completely hit. The Problem with the jokes are that they come so quick, so fast, that you are still laughing at 2 jokes before trying to catch up with the one you are on.

All in all The Lego Batman Movie is great! From the cast to the animation everything in this film is on point. They do a great job at poking fun of the history and lore of Batman. From BvS, to the Nolan Verse, to Schumacher and Adam West. There is even a brief joke about the 1940s Black and White serial. They even hit on the suicide squad and Marvel! The music is once again fun and catchy, not as catchy as Everything Is Awesome, but still great!

It’s a film that can hit all ages! Kids and adults alike. I gave it a score of 3.7, definitely one you are going to want to go out and see as soon as you can. I’d also give it a .5 bonus if I could for the jokes on the nostalgia as well as the awesome cameos! Great cast, great animation, all an all-around heartfelt joy to watch, that you’ll want to see over and over again, even if just to catch the jokes you missed! Are you excited for The Lego Batman Movie? Who is your favorite Batman? Sound off in the comments below! And remember, It Is What It Is!
