Frozen: The Dark World

Let me start by saying I really hated Snow White and The Huntsman. It was a boring mess of a film. If you can even call it a film. It was more of a series of images pasted together without a legit story or even a real reason to propel you toward the next image. That said I went to The Huntsman: Winter’s War with a bit of low expectations. Figured what the hey, let’s go check out three insanely hot girls, and Thor in the live version of Frozen Meets The Dark World. However, not only did I find myself laughing at the one liners, and smiling throughout the film, I found myself invested in the characters! Could it be? Was this actually a good movie?

Actually, no, it is not a good movie, but it is not bad. It can be entertaining, and dare I say, worth the money. I had fun in it. The story is not complex or deep by any means, and there are enormous plot holes, but it did what a film should do, and that is being entertaining.  I never found myself bored, or wanting to check my watch. While it is not something I feel I need to own or see again, it was definitely a good time at the theater.

The number one thing about this The Huntsman is obviously the cast. It stars Emily Blunt, Thor, Charlize Theron, and Jessica Chastain. While Blunt is mailing in her performance a little bit, even when she does that she is incredible. Years ago when I first started my movie awards blog, I created an award for Charlize Theron called “Crazy Chick of the Year” and I gave it to her for Snow White and The Huntsman. And I’m not going to lie; I think she deserves it again. She gives this witch such a complete edge of crazy is awesomely fun to watch. Other stars include Nick Frost reprising his role as one of the seven dwarfs. He and his brother, played by Rob Brydon, are responsible for the most of the laughs with their quick witted one liners

The other major positive is the great chemistry between Thor and Jessica Chastain. These two are great together. While Thor is a compelling ad fun actor, his near trademarked smirk helps drive the belief in these two. I would really like to see these two in another project together. Light Bulb! Chastain needs to join the Marvel Universe. As an Asgardian of some sorts. Either way, they need to be put in another project together, one where they can really shine. Another positive is an uncredited role of narration done by Liam Neeson. Don’t let it bug you as it did me, it is Liam Neeson!

Now it is not all good. There are major story holes. And if you have seen too many of the trailers, the writers, and probably director, made a few mistakes. While the trailers gave away many of the plot points, they continue to try and hide these storylines as the film goes on. Like we were not going to notice. As well the reveal for the return of the Theron’s dead character is a pretty weak plot device. As if they couldn’t come up with a reason to bring her back, but had to have her back because they had her under contract. And if you have Charlize Theron, you find a way! Even if it is as bad as this.

The cinematography and CGI were pretty lackluster too. CGI especially. While the ice scenes are pretty cool, there is a scene in the middle of the film, that didn’t need to be there, but involves Goblins. These Goblins have terrible CGI and are completely too cartoony. The action scenes shift back and forth from being shot acceptable, to being done with extreme close-ups that make them hard to understand who is fighting who.

Most of these issues I feel steam from new comer in the director’s chair, Cedric Nicolas-Troyan. His storytelling is all over the place, and his action sequences are weak. Not to mention the fact that he has Emily Blunt who is noticeably mailing it in. Hopefully this guy will take a step back and work with a few smaller films before trying to tackle another big budget film.

This will feel weird to say, but the film also missed Kristin Stewart’s Snow White. Mainly because there is a body double for one seen, that was obviously not her, and the many mentions of her character, without actually having her there hindered the film more then helped it.

All in all I actually enjoyed watching this film, despite its many flaws. It has made me really want another film or project involving the Mighty Thor and Jessica Chastain. As well it was fun to see Charlize Theron step back into this crazy witch of a role. And Even if Emily Blunt is sleeping walking through it, her sleep walking is better than most when they are fully awake.  Maybe it was my low expectations, maybe it was the company I was with, but I had a good time. Maybe not good enough to give it a great score though. I am scoring Huntsman: Winter’s War and 1.8, with a Jeebus bonus of .3 for the chemistry between Thor and Chastain. That gives us a Jeebus Score of 2.1

The Jeebus Score explained

The Jeebus score is out of a possible 5 points with a .5 bonus. Films are giving a max of 1 point each for Entertainment Value, Story/Writing, Performance, Direction, and Production. There is also a possible bonus up to .5. Any film between 2.5 and 4 is considered a good film. 4-5 is a great film. Anything over 5 is an incredibly amazing film. To get a perfect score of 5.5 a film will pretty much have to be The Empire Strikes Back or The Godfather.

Barbershop: The Next Cut

First off I was a huge fan of the first 2 BarberShop films. I cannot tell you how many times I have rewatched the first one. Cedric The Entertainer kills me every single time! I continually laugh at it no matter how many times I watch it. I was extremely excited to see we were getting to go back to the shop. Excited to learn new life lessons and have a lot of fun with these characters. While the film has not been heavily promoted I enjoyed the trailer and was quite ready to see this film. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint.

Now this is not your hyper smart comedy. Do not go looking for the next Oscar winning comedy in Barber Shop. These films are just fun the characters are enjoyable, and they are a great way to escape and have laugh. And there are plenty of laughs in this installment of the franchise. Dare I say the most laughs of the entire franchise?  This go around sees Ice Cube, Eve, Cedric the Entertainer, Anthony Anderson, and Sean Patrick Thomas return in their respective roles. They are joined by Regina Hall, Nicki Minaj, Deon Cole, Margot Bingham, Common, J.B. Smooth, Lamorne Morris, Michael Rainy Jr., and Utkarsh Ambudkar

The Comedy is incredible. There are constant laughs brought up by numerous different characters. Weather it is by way of one liners, or just situational comedy. Everyone brings a unique brand of humor to this film and it is great to see. As well the chemistry between the cast is wonderful. You feel the connection between them, and you want to just hang out at the Calvin’s Shop!

The new editions were all fun. I was especially surprised by Common’s comedic timing. He hits a lot of one liners that almost come from out of nowhere. Also Nicki Minaj was a lot of fun in this film. I was very surprised by that. I enjoyed her character, and loved what she brought to the film. Plus she is really hot. SO that definitely helped.

The story is pretty simple, and that’s all it needed to be. I did not go to this film for over bearing story that makes me think to keep up. I just want to have some fun, and be invested in these characters lives. And the story did just that. This seemed like the next step for Calvin’s Shop, and fit within the world they have set up.

However it is not all great. There a few glaring weakness. Most notably the absence of Michael Early, Leonard Earl Howze, and Deray Davis as Ricky, Dinka and Hustle Guy respectively. Yes I know DeRay Davis is only credited as “Hustle Guy” but I found myself waiting for him to walk into the shop all film long. I think it was a missed opportunity not to have him cameo. Troy Garity cameos as Isaac in the opening scene, but other than that he was missed as well. There is no explanation for the characters absences, they just aren’t there. As well there are some sports inaccuracies. Now bear with me as this is very nitpicky. The film opens with Ice Cube’s character Calvin giving a voice over in which he explains how Chicago life is now. He talks about everything Chicago has given the world, including the great baseball team the Cubs. Then in the next shot we see Calvin, in a White Sox hat. No White Sox fan would promote the Cubs. Sorry that stuck out to me. There are also some insane edting cuts that jar you out of the film

For the most part Barbershop 3: The Next Cut is a fun movie. A movie you will enjoy if you enjoyed the first films. If you were not a fan of the first 2, you probably won’t like this one. But it is honestly a fun, hilarious, and over all heartwarming film about family, and friends. I was definitely not disappointed. After being such a fan of Ice Cube and the first to films, I was not let down by this one. I am even hoping for a fourth installment! Hopefully with the missing cast members from this go around! More Ice Cube, more Cedric, more Nicki, and definitely more of the insanely beautiful Eve! Ruff Ryders all day! All in all, I am giving Barbershop 3: The Next Cut a score of 2.9, with a Jeebus Bonus for Nicki Minaj and Eve of .3, giving it a Jeebus Score of 3.2! If you have some free time in the next few weeks, liked the first 2 films, and want to laugh, give it a go!

The Jungle Book

Going into Jon FAVREAU’S The Jungle Book I was very excited, to say the absolute least. In my top five most anticipated films of the year. For starters Jon Favreau is one of my favorite directors to watch. I have yet to see one of his films that I have not liked. Not to mention I felt Iron Man 3 was missing his direction and storytelling. Add in a stellar cast of Sir Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong’o, Scarlett Johansson, Christopher Walken, Gary Shandling (may he rest in peace), and of course, Bill fucking Murray. This film is all-star packed. With what looked to be some of the greatest graphics ever laid down on film. But the question still stood, how was the execution? Did this voice cast distract from the film? Was the story put together properly? And most importantly, how did newcomer Neel Sethi perform? For this movie hinges on his ability to bring the heart and soul of film, seeing as he was the only actor on set.

First off this film is nothing short of Epic and Beautiful. From the feel of the amazing, fresh but familiar, and incredible story, to the frames and scenery of the incredibly crafted Jungle. Walking in knowing this film was shot entirely, let me repeat that, ENTIRELY, inside a studio in the middle of Downtown Los Angeles, it is legitimately breathtaking and awe inspiring to take in. I continually reminded myself that this was not a real jungle. And yet there are times that I had to question that. Numerous times. They have done such a good job in scope and in realistically creating this incredible Jungle that there are no way you cannot get lost in its beauty.

The story itself is one that we already know. Growing up on Disney’s The Jungle Book the animated film I wondered how they can turn out a fresh take on this film, but not lose the magic it had. And folks I am here to tell you that not only is this still the story you loved growing up, but it is fresh and inventive and new. The writers found a beautiful way to mend the old with some new and give us a new story that hits all the same beats as before. Right down to a few of the classic music numbers. Yes, there are music numbers in The Jungle Book! While updating the backstory and motives for our villain it has really added to a tale that was incredible as is!

The cast as well is perfectly put together. Most notably Bill fucking Murray as Baloo the bear. I was wondering how much screen time Murray would actually have as he is not one for bigger roles these days, but he was pretty prevalent and amazing as the voice of good ole Baloo. Another stand out though a minor role was the late Gary Shandling as Ikki, a porcupine with a minor but fun role. Then there was Sir Ben Kinglsy who is so good as the voice of Bagheera, that you feel like he was even the voice in the original animated film! But by far, there are 2 stand outs. One of which is Idris Elba as Shere Khan. His voice brings not only fear, but gravitas to the tiger. You feel his presence and are drawn to him ever second he is on screen. His voice commands your respect an attention and gets the feeling that this Tiger is not the mean bully from the original but an evil, vicious villain.

The other stand out is none other than the boy, the man cub himself, Neel Sethi. This movie rested upon his shoulders. It is a known fact of how difficult it is to act opposite a tennis ball in a green room. Ask Natalie Portman and Hayden Christianson. Not only that, he was alone. He is legitimately the only real thing in this entire film. A performance that would sink the film if not done properly and up to par. The Jungle Book hinges you the ability of this boy to make you relate to him, to feel what he feels, and believe that he is a long side this incredible animals. And he knocks it out of the park. This kid is a star in the making, and on his first major attempt at that!

The CGI is absolutely stunning. There was never a time that I did not think I was looking at actual animals. They have gone into such detail that ever single frame looks as real as it would be had they been in the jungle with trained animals. From the great elephants, to Baloo the bear, to King Louie, all the way down to bees buzzing around their hive. It is all so breathtaking. Now I am not one for 3D. I just don’t like it. But I saw this film in IMAX 3D, and was taken away by how seamless it all looked. It never really bothered me like it normally does.

My only gripe might actually be another positive. And that is that of Scarlett Johansson as the great anaconda Kaa. Nothing wrong with her performance of the character. But she was underutilized. While she was great as the character, one of my favorites, nearly her entire part is shown in the trailers. There is not much of her other than the one scene we see in all the trailers. But other than that it is hard to find anything to dislike about this film!

All in all, I had an incredible time watching this movie. It is by far one of the best films of the year. So entertaining, and breathtaking. From the direction of Jon Favreau, all the way down to the minor role for the late Gary Shandling, it is utterly fun and extremely entertaining. Even in 3D I enjoyed it. While being someone who hates 3D, I just don’t like putting glasses on top of my glasses. However you become so sucked into this world that I forgot I was watching a movie through 2 pair of glasses! I have scored this film 4.6 out of 5. But I’m adding the Jeebus bonus of a .4 for the incredible job Neel Sethi has done, and the awesome CGI. That gives The Jungle Book a Jeebus score of 5! One you definitely need to check out in theaters this weekend!

The Jeebus Score explained
