Marvel Cinematic Universe

The Frickin Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2

Ooga Chaka Ooga Chaka Ooga Chaka, I can’t stop this feeling, deep inside of me! Girl you know I’m ready for, the Guardiaaaaans! Guardians Of The Galaxy was my number one most anticipated film of 2014. I had no idea what to expect and it was Marvel’s biggest gamble at the time. Could they take this obscure comic and make the general movie goer audiences by in to it. Over 700 million dollars later, I think they found a way to do so.

Vol 2 has been a film I have been super excited for. Could not wait to see where they take these characters. Returning to the franchise is Vol 1 director James Gunn bringing back his rag tag group of guardians that include Star-Lord Peter Quill, played by Chris Pratt, Gamora played by Zoe Saldana, Drax played by Batista, and the duo of Rocket Raccoon and Groot voiced by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel respectively. Returning from the first film we have Karen Gillian as Nebula and Michael Rooker as Yondu. This go around the Guardians are being forced to look at Peter Quills lineage as Kurt Russel joins the cast as Star Lords father, Ego the living planet.

I will be pretty vague with the story because there wasn’t much known going into the film, and I want you to have the same experience as I am not really knowing where the story goes, but basically, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2′ continues the team’s adventures as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage.

For the most part Vol 2 is fun and exciting. It is an entertaining ride from start to finish. The marketing department really got the trailers right, they literally only showed us scenes from the opening 20 minutes mostly. The chemistry in this cast is incredible and it is fun to once again be with this family. Everyone takes their characters and dials them up a little. Batista’s Drax is an obviously stand out once again. Think about what you have seen in the trailers, and double it.

I was very worried that Baby Groot would become entirely played out early on. Before I even saw the film I was already almost too tired of Baby Groot. However, they do an incredible job of making you totally forget the overabundance of Baby Groot from the media and marketing department and right from the opening credits you fall in love with him all over again. Sean Gunn as well is incredible reprising his role from the first film.

Unfortunately it is not all great. Most notably the soundtrack is nowhere near as strong as the original. However that is a hard task to have had accomplished seeing as Vol 1 might have been the greatest soundtrack ever put together. So we can’t really fault them for that. What I do fault them for was a very generic and clichéd story. When you really get into what the plot of the movie is they go through some very basic storytelling plot points. It becomes incredibly predictable. As well the emotional beats are incredibly forced and clichéd. It’s like James Gunn said ok guys this is the part you will have the feels” and it’s not really deserved so it doesn’t play off as it should. The film is beautifully shot and the cinematography is amazing. The action sets are incredible, and for the most part the action is well shot. There were maybe 2 or 3 too many slow motion scenes though. James Gunn might have over done it a bit there.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2. Is overall a fun and excited addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it doesn’t do much to further the universe on a whole, you get the feeling the effects of this film will be felt within the MCU. Everyone is great in the roles; it is entertaining and leaves you wanting more. I scored the film a 3.3, with a Jeebus Bonus of .3 for both Baby Groot, and the feels that it can give you. That gives us a Jeebus Score of 3.6. So what say you Jackass Nation? Are you excited for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2? Who is your favorite of the Guardians? Sound off in the comments below! And remember, It Is What It Is!

The Jeebus Score explained

The Jeebus score is out of a possible 5 points with a .5 bonus. Films are giving a max of 1 point each for Entertainment Value, Story/Writing, Performance, Direction, and Production. There is also a possible bonus up to .5. Any film between 2.5 and 4 is considered a good film. 4-5 is a great film. Anything over 5 is an incredibly amazing film. To get a perfect score of 5.5 a film will pretty much have to be The Empire Strikes Back or The Godfather.

The London Sanctorum has fallen, I am here to Bargain

Well Marvel is back at it again. In 2008 they launched Iron Man. At the time a little known B Character to the majority of movie going audiences. And it was a massive hit. In 2011 they brought us Thor. Another unknown hero that once again was a hit. The in 2012 they did something none of us ever thought we would see. They brought together Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye on the big screen in a live action vision of The Avengers. But it did not end there. They made Ant Man a house hold name. And now they look to do the same with another of their long lived, but relative unknown, Doctor Strange.

The new film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Mads Mikkelsen, and Tilda Swinton. It is directed by Scott Derrickson. The story follows world renowned neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange (Cumberbatch). After a tragic car accident he loses the use of his hands. He depletes all his options, until he is shown a new way. A way through the mystical Arts. Strange begins a journey to be the Sorcerer Supreme, but is confronted with an even more powerful being that threatens the fabric of reality.

First off, Marvel has done it again. They have done such a good job at bringing another character to life and into his public eye in a way that the majority of the movie going audiences will be able to get behind! While the history and story behind Doctor Strange is not easy to grasp, the film does very well at bringing it together pretty easy and pretty quickly.

First off the cast is all very functional. No that’s not a bad thing. They all do a great job. They bring the characters to life. What I mean by functional goes along with my thoughts of Thor and Iron Man, when I see RDJ, I see Tony Stark, when I see Hemsworth, I see Thor. I refer to them as those characters. When I see Cumberbatch, I’m still going to refer to him as Cumberbatch. And that is not a knock on him or the film. He is really good in this movie. It’s just not an iconic performance that he disappears into.

There was a lot of controversy behind the casting of Tilda Swinton, and I will say she was great in the role, but again, it was not an iconic performance. You could have casted someone closer to the characters Asian descent. But she was still good in the role. Rachel McAdams was also a good edition to the cast, but my favorite was Benedict Wong. Now he didn’t do anything special, he was just a fun character to have.

Mads Mikkelsen suffers from Marvel Villain disorder. Aside from Loki Marvel villains don’t historically live up to the hype. And Mads’ character suffers from it. He is fine in the role, and it builds to someone else, who I will talk about in my spoiler review on the Jackass Nation Podcast Channel. But the mark out, is Chiwetel Ejiofor. His take on Mordo could be the first and only, villain since Loki to really build on itself. I am excited for where this character goes.

The best thing about this film is the visuals. They are off the chain. It was absolutely stunning. It was really cool in IMAX 3D, and you guys know me; I’m not a fan of 3D. Now I hope to see it again before I record my spoiler review in normal, because I don’t know if it NEEDS to be seen in 3D. But I will say that I enjoyed it. The cinematography, whether it be the fight choreography, or the inceptionish like feel to it, is incredible.

Derrickson was obviously the perfect director for this film. You really feel his touch on it, and has the perfect hint of horror, mixed in with Marvel humor. Marvel does such a good job bringing the right directors in for each of their films. And Derrickson is once again an example of Marvel’s perfection.

While it is definitely not my favorite film in Marvel, it would probably wind up in the lower half, I still really enjoyed. There is no Jeebus Bonus for it, so it’s final Jeebus score is 3.5. But what say you Jackass Nation? Are you excited for Doctor Strange? What is your favorite MCU film? Sound off in the comments below! And remember, It Is What It Is!

Ant-Man

Ant-Man was supposed to be made over 8 years ago. Edgar Wright had a screenplay written and ready and it finally came go time. And then uh oh, Edgar Write no longer fits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So in comes Peyton Reed. Can this comedy director do the MCU justice? With a character that no one knows, or cares about? A character who arguably is dumber then Aquaman? Well let me tell you what, Ant-Man does not disappoint! Starring Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lily, and Corey Stoll, it is an action packed, fun filled, heist film!

Dr. Hank Pym (Douglas) has spent his life trying to protect the secret of the Ant-Man. But when his protégé Darren Cross (Stoll) finds the secret to his technology, Pym must find a way to stop him from certain doom. To do so, Pym recruits career cat burglar Scott Lang (Rudd) to help him and his daughter (Lily) break in and steal back his technology.

This movie is sooo much fun. It was easily my most anticipated of the year. Not for any other reason than it was the most different. It had that Guardians of the Galaxy feel to it! It’s not a sequel, it is new, and it was interesting. It was the newest property from Marvel, and with its history of Edgar Wright leaving the property, it had the biggest possibility of failing. However, I do not think it will be a failure. This is a true heist film. It’s almost Honey, I Shrunk the Kids meet Ocean 11. Everyone was well cast, the story was fun, and the action is on par with the Marvel films. There are many tie ins and Easter eggs that link to the rest of the films, and the ever growing universe. They aren’t thrown in there just to be there either, they actually fit well.

One of the positives is obviously Michael Douglas. He is amazing as Hank Pym. I really want a Hank Pym prequel! Starring Michael Douglas! Paul Rudd kind of tones down his Paul Ruddyness, and is fun to watch, and believable as badass superhero. Evangeline Lily has really set herself up to be a great action starlet. Between her work on The Hobbit films, and her incredible job here, she is really going to be a big part going into the rest of the Marvel Universe. I loved the side cast too. Michael Pena and TI are great! Awesome comic relief.

Ant-Man does a great job of being an origin story, without being an origin story. While being an origin for Scott Lang, it’s not an Ant-Man origin. And that is a great plus to the film. As well the story itself is fun and a different take on Marvel films. After The Avengers Age of Ultron, they do a good job at scaling down the films stakes. It’s not world defeating, while still having grave stakes!

But no film is perfect, and this one has a few problems. While Corey Stoll is an incredible actor and great at his roll, the roll is not great. He is kind of one the things that Marvel does do bad, and that’s make a weak villain. He is scary, and ominous, but he’s just a bad guy, to be a bad guy. There is no real reason for it, other than “You never gave me your secret so I’m bad!” Which I noticed very early on. Also as cool as the ants are, especially ANTony, they kind of took me out of the film when they were on screen. I didn’t really like the CGI of them. It felt very cartoony, not what they did, just the look of them.

So folks that is Ant-Man. I’ll let you know, there are 2 post credit scenes, so stay till the end. Falcons cameo scene is incredible, and a lot of fun. Basically, Ant-Man is just as exciting and awesome that I had expected it to be! I’m giving it a score of 3.7, with a full .5 bonus for the SECOND post credit scene, because it was so epic! That gives it a Jeebus Score of 4.2! SO much fun! But how about you Jackass Nation? What did you think about Ant-Man? Have you seen it? Are you looking forward to it? Let me here your thoughts in the comments below! And as always, keep on nerding!

The Jeebus Score explained

The show without Fear: Marvel’s DareDevil

Marvel is pretty much running the show right now. Their cinematic universe is on the top of its game ready to roll out Phase III. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have improved incredibly since Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Agent Carter was an amazing miniseries. They just seem to know what they are doing. We have been waiting for the Netflix phase to get off the ground, and they have done it. The first of, what I will call, The Defenders Series’ has hit the ground running. Marvel’s DareDevil is here. DareDevil stars Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Toby Leonard Moore, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Bob Gunton, Rosario Dawson, and Vincent D’Onofrio as The Kingpin Wilson Fisk. Produced by Steven S. DeKnight and Drew Goodard and is based on the Marvel superhero of the same name. Word of warning, this review will not really have many actual Spoilers, but there may be minor details of the shows plot. SO if you want to know nothing about it before you see it, then stop reading. There will be a spoiler at the end that pertains to how a character is written, but I will mark it appropriately so you can skip that paragraph.

Marvel’s DareDevil tells the story of Marvel’s superhero by the same name. Matt Murdock is a lawyer who as a child was in an accident that causes him to lose his sight, but causes his remaining senses to function with near superhuman peak ability. Tired of seeing his city, Hell’s Kitchen, fall to criminals and dirt bags has decided to take up a quest as a vigilante. On the flip side. A near practical ghost of a business man, Wilson Fisk, has decided to rebuild the city, though while Murdock’s tactics are morally right, Fisk believes the means will justify the ends. Thus pitting the two on a collision course of mass repercussions.

I was very pleased with the casting. I was weary of Charlie Cox going in because I was not very familiar with his work. 2 episodes in and I realized he was perfect for the role. So perfect that I expect to see him in the films. I want to see Cox reprise this role in Civil War, and Infinity Gauntlet. I also would mind a S.H.I.E.L.D. cameo. Ann Woll is very functional and she grows as the series drives forward. I didn’t really like her at first but her character arc and her portrayal is great. A stand out star is Henson as Murdock’s law partner Foggy Nelson. Not just comic relief, but brings a lot of heart to the show. D’Onofrio is good in his roll. I have issues but I will get into that a little later.

Let’s talk positives. DareDevil is not like anything you have seen in the MCU. This is kind of a staple for Marvel. Each film has its own feel to it; this show takes its own identity too. It is dark, and gritty and violent. You haven’t ever seen this much violence from a Marvel property since the Blade series. It is the perfect change of pace. And speaking of, the pacing is great. It flows very well with right amount of vigilante/lawyering percentages. The story is very fluid. Filming for Netflix and being able to run everything at once lets them eliminate the “monster of the week” format that a lot of these shows can have, and lets them tell a more fluid singular story.

But I’m not just going to turn a blind eye. Remember, being a fan means being able to recognize problems. One of my issues is the character of Wilson Fisk. Kingpin is one of my all-time favorite villains. I have always enjoyed him. But to me he needed to be more intimidating then this makes him out to be. Again I don’t want to get too much into it right here, I will in a moment. Another issue I had was the lack of tie-ins to the MCU. There are a few references to New York, and The Avengers, but nothing that really made the connection strong. And honestly, that’s just about all I have for complaints. So I’m going to delve into the one thing I really found to be the main issue with show. This might have some SPOILERS! So if you don’t wish to know plot details you might want to skip the next paragraph.

SPOILERS! You have been warned. So I mentioned my issues with Wilson Fisk. That is nothing against Vincent D’Onofrio’s performance. He is great, he disappears into the role. The problem is the character himself. He is written nearly as a whiny little bitch. Through flashbacks, he is shown to have an abusive father and a poor childhood. I understand that the character along with DareDevil are two sides of the same coin. He is meant to be portrayed almost as an antihero. He wants what Murdoch wants, he just has questionable methods. Now as the season came to an end, I realized this something I hadn’t thought of. I had been thinking of this not as an origin story, but just jumping into this world. By the end you see this season is an origin. An origin of DareDevil, and for Kingpin. There is a scene when Fisk breaks out of police custody, and in that scene I saw the Kingpin I know and fear. My hopes are that in season 2, we get more of this Kingpin.

NO MORE SPOILERS! IT IS SAFE TO CONTINUE READING!

So in closing, I found DareDevil to be a great show. One that I hope will continue and mix in with the MCU for years to come. It has made me excited to see the rest of The Defenders series’ that will be coming out later this year and next. I gave Marvel’s DareDevil a score of 4.6, with a .4 bonus for its grounded, gritty dark undertones and fun action. Giving us a Jeebus Score of 5.0. So what say you Jackass Nation? Did you enjoy DareDevil? Have you binged on it like me? what else are you looking forward to from Marvel? Sound off in the comments.
