Agent Carter

Marvel’s Agent Carter in review.

Now that Agent Carter has ended, and I say ended because it has. Agent Carter was classified as a mini-series that ran for 8 episodes. They never called it its own series, it was planned and ran as a mini-series. Now where was I, oh yes, now that Agent Carter has ended I thought I’d give my opinions on it. Not that any of you care, but hey, maybe someone does, and I have a computer so I’m going to write about it. I like my opinions. You should be warned also, SPOILERS ARE AHEAD! I AM GOING TO TALK ABOUT A SHOW THAT RECENTLY AIRED AND HAS RAN ITS COURSE AND ENDED! SPOILERS! DON’T COMPLAIN IF YOU KEEP READING AND ARE SPOILED! Ok.

So from start to finish Agent Carter was 8 episodes. I think that was right amount for them to run. It maybe could have stood to air 1 or 2 more, but it did not hurt it to stop at 8. With a lot of shows, Superhero shows especially, they get to running 22, 23 episodes a season. With that many you run the risk of not having a story that can really be drawn out in each episode. Especially in the beginning. You have to filter in “monster of the week” or “lesson of the week” type of episodes. Not that it is a bad thing. It can just sometimes distract from the overall arch of the show. With this mini-series format, they knew their story, and executed it perfectly.

The cast was strong in my opinion. It starred Hayley Atwell, James D’Arcy, Chad Michael Murry, Enver Gjokaj, Shea Whigham, Ralph Brown, Dominic Cooper, Bridget Regan, and a cameo appearance by Neal McDonough as Dum Dum Dugan. The series took place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and held tie in’s to the films, mostly toward Captain America: The First Avenger, but held connections like characters mentioned in other films.

Agent Carter followed Agent Peggy Carter (Atwell) of the S.S.R. where she is often treated as nothing more than a glorified secretary. Missing her days of the war where she had purpose, she finds herself in middle of a scandal involving an old friend, Howard Start (Cooper). Allied by only Stark’s loyal butler Jarvis (D’Arcy) Peggy must find a way to clear his name, before it is too late, and many innocents are lost in a catastrophic disaster.

Right from the start I was entertained. It immediately become one of my favorite shows to watch. Seeing Agent Carter have to work around her time and being over looked for being a woman was a very welcomed plot device. Plus I am a sucker noir type films. I loved this era. The roaring 40s. The show kept you guessing on where it was going, who was behind the curtain, and what the plan was. In the end it wasn’t Hydra that I thought it would be, but Leviathan, and the can only be assumed to be as The Black Widow Project. The character Dottie (Regan) presumably the first Black Widow. Hinting toward the past of our own MCU hottie, Agent Romanoff, The Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).

In the end Leviathans plan was simple revenge. Stark had created a gas by mistake that caused the death of many Russian soldiers, including Johann Fennoffs (Brown) brother. Luckily Agent Carter and Jarvis are able to foil his plan in the end, with only Dottie escaping. Fennoff is placed in prison with a cell mate, hinting to what can only be assumed as the beginnings of HYDRA. Toby Jones reprises his role in the final scene of the series as Arnim Zola, ex hydra scientist, now prisoner of the S.S.R. and cell mate of Fennoff. Leading us to believe that it is here where HYDRA began to its plan to grow within the S.S.R. and eventual S.H.I.E.L.D.

Do I think this show doesn’t need to continue? Not necessarily. Another short mini-series could benefit the history of S.H.I.E.L.D. and give us more adventures. I’d like them to jump a little time. I’d like to think with how the series ended Agent Carter is still where she was in the beginning. Knowing her worth, and how important she is the agency, but still being over looked. That is her superpower. Constantly being underestimated. This spot leaves us to believe the Marvel one shot Agent Carter that accompanied the Iron Man 3 Blu Ray release takes place after this series. If they were to jump time for the next installment, Peggy and Stark could have begun building S.H.I.E.L.D. We could see her leading the agency. Building it from the ground up. See HYDRA begin to form in the under belly. I think there is a lot to go on there.

All in all, I was very impressed with Agent Carter. Given the slow start to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this could’ve ended up bad. Normally my Jeebus Score is reserved for film, but if I were to give it Agent Carter I would give it a 4.2. I can tell you this is a mini-series I will be purchasing on Blu Ray.

The Jeebus Score explained

The Jeebus score is out of a possible 6 points. Films are giving a max of 1 point each for Acting, Entertainment, and Casting, and a max of .5 for Dialog, Cinematography, and Direction. There is also a possible bonus up to .5. Any film between 2.5 and 4 is considered a good film. 4-5 is a great film. Anything over 5 is an incredibly amazing film. To get a perfect score of 6 a film will pretty much have to be The Empire Strikes Back or The Godfather.

Marvel with the Phase 3 Knockout Punch

So back in 2008 Marvel and DC really started swinging. DC took a few jabs and hooks in the early rounds, with the Dark Knight trilogy, but nothing devastating. Marvel really started to wear them down with the beginning of Phase II. Yea DC got a knock down with Man of Steel, but Marvel was up by 4 count. It was late in the fight when Marvel hit DC hard with uppercut called Guardians of The Galaxy. They seemed content to with the points in the bag and they’d just wait out the fight, win by decision. DC started swinging for the fences, boom, Justice League and an entire slate of films. DC was going for the knock out. Until to day, when we all realized Marvel was just rocking the rope-a-dope, and kaboom. Knockout punch. Marvel is the reigning champ.

So when DC released their slate of films in their shareholders meeting it was pretty cool. Named off their upcoming properties, got everyone excited, but in true Marvel fashion they upped the game at completely out of nowhere press event. Disney sent out invitations on Monday inviting media outlets and film pundits to come to a special Marvel Event at the El Capitan Theater. They spent the day dropping their Phase III plans that will cumulate in a 2 part Avengers Infinity War film extravaganza.

The upcoming Phase III reads like this:

  • Captain America 3: Civil War on May 6 2016
  • Doctor Strange on November 4 2016
  • Guardians of the Galaxy 2 on May 5 2017
  • Thor 3: Ragnarok on July 28 2017
  • Black Panther(Starring Chadwick Bosewick) on November 3 2017
  • Avengers: Infinity War part 1 in May 2018
  • Captain Marvel on July 6 2018
  • Inhumans on November 2 2018
  • Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 on May 3 2019

So that’s what we have to look forward too. Before we get into what this all means let’s first look at what is missing. Iron Man 4. Not that it is needed. But it’s odd that it’s not there. And I do not know what the new picture deal is the Robert Downey Jr. and Marvel have come too, but I’d assume it includes both Avengers, Captain America, and either Black Panther, or Guardians 2. I think Black Panther makes more sense, but I’d love to see him Guardians.

Also missing is your solo Hulk film. No personally I don’t think we need a solo Hulk film. Yes the Ed Norton film The Incredible Hulk was good, but not as good as Hulk was in Avengers. However when asked about another solo film for the big ball of rage, Kevin Fiege replied:

“I wouldn’t say Hulk is absent from the timeline. I’d say Hulk is going to appear in many of those movies, particularly all the Avengers movies leading up to the Infinity War. Mark Ruffalo is on board for all those films and we’re excited for all those films. What happens with a standalone Hulk film? I’m going to say what I would have said about Black Panther last week or Captain Marvel before that, or Guardians of the Galaxy two years ago or Ant-Man ten years ago: We’ll see. We’d love to do it, we’d love to find a place to put it, but right now Hulk will be appearing with his friends in the other films.

So looks like we won’t be getting the big guy by himself, but that’s not to say we won’t be getting him. Where he will show up is anybody’s guess.

Well that leaves us with an exciting couple of years ahead of us. With as much as they gave us, they Marvel has also created more questions. Like when we will see Hulk. As well we will be looking for casting, who is Captain Marvel? Katee Sackoff? Is Benedict Cumberbatch Dr. Strange? Who will the Inhumans line up, will Black Bolt be a part of it? Is Vin Diesel going to be Black Bolt? Where will Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. play in all of this? How about the Netflix characters? Will they be a part of this? Dare Devil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist? So many questions, so much to come!

Let’s look at Civil War first. The rumor says that after the events of Age of Ultron the government will be coming down on our heroes. And rightfully so. Looks like Iron Man has created the world’s biggest threat, based on something Ant Man began! So who should the Heroes of the world answer too? Welt he government obviously. And I would assume Stark is going to agree do to the creation of Ultron. You know who won’t agree? The worlds number 1 Boy Scout Captain America. This will further the rift between the leading heads of the Avengers and set them on a path that ends shield to flight stabilizer. With Black Panther caught right in the middle. But that’s not all. I predict, rightfully so, that Black Widow, Falcon, and Hawkeye will play crucial parts. But that’s not all. I bet War Machine/Iron Patriot makes his presence felt, as well as, wait for it, The Winter Soldier. That’s right. I’m where else does he fit in? He has to be involved in some potential.

Rumor for Strange says that Benedict Cumberbatch is close to signing. Well so was Phoenix. So I won’t put all my eggs in that basket just yet. I’m ok with the casting, but just okay. Seems like Cumberbatch is up for any and every role, and while I like him, and he’s obvious, I’d love something out of left field. Someone no one is expecting. The introduction of Strange will be significant. Especially if we want an eventual Planet Hulk. Maybe a phase 4 set on World War Hulk?

Black Panther is the one we as fans have been clambering for the most. And finally we will be getting it! And with Chadwick Bozeman no less! I think this is inspiring casting! I loved him in 42, I loved him Glory Road, he played Boobie Miles! And he was The Funk! He is one of the best! His inclusion in this universe really adds another level of talent! Looks like we will be getting hiom first in Civil War, probably without much character development, and we will probably get the real look at him when Black Panther hits us! The concept art is bad ass! BlackPanther If that doesn’t scream awesome, I don’t know what does!

Not much else is known about the other projects. Guardians 2 will look to recapture the magic, while Thor 3 will set us on the path to the Infinity War. Infinity War will be really interesting. Especially with the comments on how the Avenger line up will be forever changed after Age of Ultron. I expect the original line up, and the Guardians not to really make their presence felt until Part 2 in 2019.

However, all though Marvel has knocked out DC with this one, you best believe, DC is prepping for the rematch. We are looking at 30ish superhero films and shows in the next 6 years. The fight will continue, and no matter what happens, I think it is us fans who are the true winners.

Hooked on a feeling! A review of Guardians of the Galaxy

For a pretty long time now, my most anticipated film of the year has been Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel’s final film in Phase II before we head into The Avengers Age of Ultron. This film looks to be Marvel’s biggest gamble to date. The characters are by far the most obscure, well until the post credit scene, but for the most part, some of the most obscure in all of the Marvel library. The hope was that now that we are 12 films in, that Marvel has gained a track record that gives the viewer a trust that’ll send them out to take a chance on the film. I for one hope that you all do take the leap of faith, you will not be disappointed.

Guardians of the Galaxy! The next big Marvel adventure. The film stars an amazing cast that includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bautista, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, and the voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel. Directed James Gunn, the film tells the story of 5 unlikely heroes that find themselves in the middle of a galaxy threatening crises and must come together to save the lives of billions upon billions of people.

The film is a lot of fun to watch. Chris Pratt who plays the main character Peter Quill, AKA Star Lord, is a thief who becomes the de facto leader of the group. He is joined by the assassin adopted daughter of the war lord Thanos, Gamora (Saldana). Along with two bounty hunters, Rocket Raccoon (Cooper) and Groot (Diesel) and a maniac named Drax the Destroyer (Bautista) who is on the hunt for Ronin the Accuser (Pace) for murdering his family. Ronin is joined by Gamora’s adopted sister Nebula (Gillan) in his quest to destroy the planet Xandar and the Nova Corps.

Guardians gets the blockbuster fun done right. You are entertained the entire film. There’s not really a moment in the film that it drags or gets boring. The graphics are also epic. As I watched the movie I kept get the feeling I was watching Star Wars, until I’d get a feeling that it was a Star Trek film. Finally I came to a conclusion that’s really the perfect mix between Star Wars, Star Trek, and a Marvel Film. The soundtrack was awesome as well. Every song takes you back, and flows within the film perfectly. They each give a sense of who Peter Quill is and where he comes from

While the movie is Peter Quill’s story, the show is definitely stolen by a trio of characters. Yes the superstar is obviously Bradley Cooper as Rocket. He brings such personality to the character that you don’t even hear Cooper’s voice. You believe this is the talking Raccoon Marvel has given us. Groot was special case. How was Vin Diesel going to give us substance with only 3 words, “I am Groot”? Well he does it. Not just as comedy relief, but he emotionally connects with us as well. And Bautista as Drax is amazingly a break out star. He’s not a world class thespian be any means, but he is still able to steal the scenes when on camera.

It’s not all perfect though. While the story remains as Peter Quill’s story, he is the most developed character in the film. These characters all have such rich back stories. Most of which we as fans wouldn’t know off the top of our heads. I for one had to look them all up when I heard of the movie. After doing my research I became very excited, yet the film doesn’t give us much on most them. You get some dialog about where they come from, but no real sense of who they are. Gamora especially I would love to see more about. Speaking of, I was amped up all film for the eventual fight between her sister Nebula and her, yet when you finally get it, it’s not all that great. And as for the fights, and action sequences, while the space battles all look phenomenal and are awesome, a lot of fights felt a little too choreographed.

I’m going to give this film a Jeebus score of 4.9 with a bonus of .3 for Rocket, Groot, and Drax. Rounding us out to 5.2, Multiple Viewings Required! Now I’m not going to spoil it, but I am going to go into a little bit about how I felt about the post credit scene. So if you don’t want any information, or anything that could be considered a SPOILER, please skip the rest of this article.

POSSIBLE SPOILER ZONE: Ok, in 2008 Samuel L. Jackson walked out of the shadows after the credits of Iron Man and spoke about the Avengers Initiative. This changed the landscape of the Superhero Genre. Hell the landscape of the all of cinema. The Shared Universe concept was born. After The Incredible Hulk Tony Stark walked into a bar and spoke to General Ross. In 2010 Agent Coulson found a Hammer after the credits. In 2011 Loki controlled Erik Selvig. And at the end of Captain America, Sam Jackson once again walked out of the shadows and told Steve Rogers he needed him to save the world. Then we got a montage of scenes for The Avengers. But then something changed. After the Avengers we got 2 scenes. One including Shawarma. While funny, it was the Thanos one we wanted. We loved it and were ok with Shawarma. But then, Tony Stark had a conversation with Bruce Banner, and we got nothing. And now, we again, get a cheap nothing scene! We know there is Age of Ultron Footage out there, you couldn’t give us anything? No you give us one post credit scene that gives us nothing to look forward to for the next 273 days leading up to Age of Ultron! Nothing to further this amazing universe you have created!? For this, while I originally gave a .5 for a bonus, I am taking away .2! DAMN YOU JAMES GUNN AND KEVIN FIEGE! DAMN YOU!

San Diego Comic Con Day 3

Ok, so major news Saturday out of Comic Con, I know I am two days late, but there was a lot to talk about. So without any further au due, let’s get into it.

DC opened up with nothing but Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. No rumored Shazaam info, no rumored schedule. Just pictures, and footage. The footage which is unable to be seen by anyone not at Comic Con, which is crap. But, I have a slight description. The footage allegedly opened up in Gotham, Supes is hovering in the air then on comes the Bat Signal. He glances down and it reveals Batman on a rooftop. Batman’s eyes glow blue revealing him to be in his tech armor, very reminiscent of Frank Miller’s the Dark Knight Returns. Supes eyes glow red and he flares up toward Batman and the footage ends. The film seems to take a lot of its cues from the graphic novel, which I think is a great idea. If you’ve read the novel The Dark Knight Returns or seen the animated film, you know how detailed and incredible that story is. From the announcement of the film with the quote from the graphic novel to this test footage, it’s been pretty clear what direction they are taking it. I for one am still not 100% onboard. I think Bat-Fleck is the best thing going for the film but it has its issues. The casting of Mamoa as Aquaman, great casting, but putting Aquaman in the film, unnecessary. Same with Victor Stone, AKA Cyborg. And for Wonder Woman, the casting of Gal Godat is horrendous. They have finally released an image of her, and yes, the costume looks phenomenal. Yes she is very hot. But I don’t by her as Wonder Woman. Yes she was in the Iraqi army, she just too skinny. Not to mention, she is not an actress. She is a model who acts. If you didn’t care to have a trained actress play the most iconic female superhero ever, why would not just get Gina Carano? That’s just my 2 cents. Facebook-20140728-012253 Facebook-20140728-012328 Facebook-20140728-012357 Facebook-20140728-012414

Next up we had Legendary. Legendary had two pretty big major announcements. Godzilla 2 will include more of our favorite monsters. Mothra, Rodan, and King Gidorah, AKA Monster Zero. I was in the camp of the not so thrilled with Godzilla. I felt they needed much more Godzilla in the Godzilla film. However, with the introduction of these three iconic monsters, I am back on board. Will they let me down? That remains to be seen. I will say though, historically, sequels give you more of what you want. Batman Returns more Batman, Terminator 2, more Terminator. So I assume that Godzilla 2, will give us more Godzilla. On a possibly related note. Legendary and Universal will be teaming up to give us what a teaser called Skull Island. Skull Island the legendary home of the iconic King Kong. Rumor has it that the film will give us an origin of Kong. How he back King of this island and the islanders began to worship him. As well that it will be taking place within the Godzilla universe. If this is true, it makes me even more excited that we could get King Kong Vs Godzilla later on down the road!

Warner Brothers also released a trailer and new poster for Mad Max: Fury Road. The film looks fun, Tom Hardy plays the title character and is definitely a good successor for Mel Gibson. It looks action packed, it looks like them going back and taking their time really paid off for them. I cannot wait to see this film!

WB also aired the Pilots of both Flash and Gotham. While most people have already seen the Flash pilot, The Gotham pilot was aired for the first time. Reception seems to be pretty positive. It is said to be much grounded in reality. Not being a Superhero television show, but a cop drama. Even characters like Robin Taylor’s Oswald Cobblepot, and Corey Michael Smith’s Edward Nygma are believable. The Arrow panel seemed to be the most fun with them showing an extended trailer for season 3. Looks like we will be upping the action and drama. Ra’s Al Ghul will apparently be making his long anticipated debut. They spoke of the crossovers that will take place between Flash and Arrow. Most notably Felicity’s presence on both show. The Constantine panel answered a few questions and also showed an extended trailer. Needless to say, DC is on top of their TV game.

I don’t know if there was a full panel, or not but at some point this weekend this image of The Thing pre CGI from the Fantastic FOur reboot surfaced. Looks about the same as The Hulk from the Avenges. First bit of good news in a while coming out of this film. Facebook-20140728-012312

Finally, the bread and butter, the winner of Comic Con, in my opinion. All though they did not announce any of their untitled projects, Marvel did give us a lot. Evangeline Lily will be playing Hope Van Dyne, daughter of Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym. Will probably be Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang’s love interest. Corey Stoll will be replacing Patrick Wilson as Darren Cross AKA Yellowjacket. Plot seems to revolve around Pym and Cross being business partners. The Ying and Yang of the business. Cross seems to be the one who wants to take the company in an evil direction while Pym is out to help mankind. Seems as Pym will recruit Lang to take his place and become the Ant Man.

Marvel brought out the Avengers and they answered some fun questions. Hemsworth was asked where he would like them to take Thor, to which he replied “I’d like to see them turn him into a woman”. Ruffalo joked about how he used to be nobody now he walks down the street and has a name, everyone yells “Hi Hulk”. All he pieces of the puzzle have been released and they create an amazing picture of the Avengers all being over powered by Ultron Drones. Most notably The Vision appears in the background in the top left corner. Finally they showed some footage. Do you remember the photo released a about a week ago with the Avengers all hanging out in plain clothes in Avengers Tower? Well the apparently the footage opened up there will all the Avengers joking and hanging around trying to pick up Mjolnir. Stark can’t do it, not even with an Iron Man glove or help from Rhodey, Banner can’t move, then Cap steps up to the plate and it budges just a little and they all go nuts. That is until a ruffling is heard and out walks a damaged Iron Man suit, that begins to speak of the extinction of the human race, and that he is the Ultron. A montage of action footage rolls, including Black Widow in her new outfit, Banner in a strait jacket, tanks being thrown. The footage ends with the Avengers laid out in a desolate desert. The Hulk raging out, then in comes Iron Man, in the Hulk Buster gear. The two go at it and the footage ends. I don’t know about you, but just the mere thought of how this looked gives me Goosebumps. I am so excited for next year!

To end Marvels panel they brought out James Gunn who revealed that Guardians 2 is coming. Says a lot for the studio to green light the film before the first has even been released. Guardians of the Galaxy is my most anticipated film of the year and I cannot wait to see it this Thursday night!!!!

San Diego Comic Con Day 2

Most of today’s news from Comic Con comes in the form of television. A lot of the shows like Game of Thrones and Walking Dead I don’t watch so I can’t really speculate. But 3 of the big shows they did speak of are pretty interesting news. We got some more character concept art from Avengers, which all seems to add together to make one huge photo. I will wait to talk and post that until the final pieces are revealed tomorrow. In the meantime, let’s get into the news.

The Arrow panel seemed a lot of fun. Olicity fans got pretty excited. I am not a fan of Olicity. While I will concede that Emily Rickards who plays Felicity is smoking ass hot, she is now where as fine as Caity Lotz who plays the Black Canary, Sara Lance. Lotz was not at the panel, which worried me until I saw the Canary in the trailer for season 3. Trailer is pretty epic. It looks like we will get some heat in the Arrow camp. As Diggle and Ollie seem to be having out. Felicity looks like she will be taking some bumps. And as for Roy, well we already showed the Arsenal costume. Thea’s story arc looks like it will be very exciting two. Thea, played by Willa Holland and he father Malcom Merlin, played by John Barrowman, seemed to be having the most fun on the panel. They said the Thea we know is no more, and I for one can’t wait to see, Speedy.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. announced some new cast members. Lucy Lawless will be playing Isabelle Hartley. A Veteran S.H.I.E.L.D. agent that Coulson recruits to help rebuild the organization. Lance Hunter will be played by Nick Blood. Hunter is a mercenary who in the comics is the leader of S.T.R.I.K.E., the British counterpart to S.H.I.E.L.D.. Reed Diamond joins the cast Daniel Whitehall, a.k.a. Kraken. Whitehall seems to be the overarching bad guy for the season as he will be a leader in the Hydra organization. Hail Hydra. In the comics, Kraken possess a helmet that gives its wearer a magical and indestructible armor. Our final character will be Barbara Morse, the Mockingbird. No word yet on who will play her, but the character is a superbly trained athlete, gymnast, unarmed combatant, and spy. She is enhanced to the peak of human potential physically, and pretty much a pretty bad A chick. I admit the first season of S.H.I.E.L.D. was very slow, and basically, not good. But I stuck with it, and sooner, well more like later, it got a lot better. Most notably after Lady Sif showed. I am excited for the next season.

We didn’t get much info on Agent Carter. What we did learn is that rather unknown Louis D’Esposito will direct the pilot, Russo brothers who brought us the Winter Soldier will direct episodes 2 and 3. And The First Avenger Director will helm episode 4. When asked about Dominic Coper’s Howard Stark, Haley Atwell replied “That would be fantastic if that could happen” So I’m going to take that as a no, or he will show up very little, like Nick Fury does for S.H.I.E.L.D.. I can’t really say I am super excited for this one. I’ll watch it, but it’s not really on my countdown to list. It’s going to take place in the past, and outside the timeline, it just doesn’t seem like there is much they can do.

That’s pretty much all I got out of today. Tomorrow is the big day in Hall H. DC/WB, Fox, Sony, and Marvel. Can’t wait!

Still hooked on a feeling. Marvel releases the 2nd Guardians of the Galaxy trailer.

Marvel is firing on all cylinders these days. What started in 2008 with Samuel L Jackson telling Robert Downey Jr he wanted to talk about “the Avengers initiative” in a post credits scene of Iron Man, has grown into an entire universe. A universe that has now spread for  films, and now a 10 with Marvel’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy. Today Marvel has released their 2nd trailer for the upcoming superhero film. The fun thing about the Guardians is, we don’t really know what to expect. Remember back when superhero were limited to Batman and Superman. Then came the X-Men and Spider-Man, both well known so accepted. But then, then Jon Favreau, Kevin Fiege, and Marvel took a chance on Iron Man. No one really knew what to expect, but it blew up the superhero genre and introduced us to a whole new future of for the superhero film. But since then the films have been expected. Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Avengers. All a little more known. But the Guardians of the Galaxy? The general public doesn’t know them. Hell half the comic book world doesn’t know. So watching this trailer, you get the same feelings you got early on with Iron Man, its exciting to see where this goes.

Guardians of the Galaxy tells the story of Peter Quill as he is forced to team up a band of misfit criminals to save the galaxy from the forces of evil. The film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, John C Reilly, Glen Close, and Benicia del Toro. It will be directed James Gunn, and is set to be released August 1 2014.

This Week in Movie News

Captain America The Winter Soldier, $476,706,000. Making 10.2 million on its Thursday night openings, more than double what Captain America the First Avenger. It set a single day record for April with 36.9 million, and an opening weekend of 95 million. Not too shabby. It has done about 46% better than the original. And Rightfully so. The Winter Soldier is an amazing film, that you should all go see. Numerous times.

With the sudden passing of Harold Ramis, Ivan Reitman made the decision his heart just wasn’t into a Ghostbusters 3. And rightfully so. In his departure Chris Miller and Phil Lord stepped in. However it looks like they are now leaving the potential project. The studio is in talks with other directors. Problem with this I have is Harold Ramis is gone, Ivan Reitman is out, and Bill Murray has no interest in ever doing another Ghostbuster sequel. What’s the appeal? Why not star fresh. Scrap what you have, and give us a reboot.

Matt Damon is in final talks to join the film The Martian. The Martian, tells the tale of a space crew on Mars when something goes terribly wrong, Mark Watney (Damon), thought to be dead, and is left on Mars. With no way to contact his crew, and very little supplies, Watney, must handle the obstacles put a head of him and try to survive in hopes that a rescue mission finds him. The film sounds entertaining, and Damon is a good choice, however Damon is a good choice for nearly any role. The film sounds nearly like Gravity meets Castaway. Which is a very interesting combination. I look forward to more about this film.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has released more viral marketing. This time the subject is actually very very exciting. In an article, written by Eddie Brock, Cletus “Killer “Cassidy has been caught, and placed in prison. It goes on to say that he gave very little struggle. What’s most interesting about this? The mention of Cassidy? Who eventually becomes Carnage? Yea that’s cool. But what’s even cooler is when you remember the past. During filming of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Jim Carey visited the set while filming was going on. Rumors swirled that he was in talks to play Cassidy. And He would be, Killer, in the role. Couple that with the fact that Sony is releasing a Venom spinoff film, and think to yourself, who is Venom going to face off against? Can’t be Spider-Man, which would just be another Spider-Man film. Could we be building to Venom/Carnage? I sure hope so.

Schmoes Know have reported that Kick Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow is going to take over the directing and writing duties of the He-Man Masters of the Universe film. If I’m not mistaken recently John Cho left the film, I think to do some dumb 80s cartoon that will be getting a big screen adaption. I like this move, because I was a huge fan of Kick Ass 2. However with script re-writes and new directors, I don’t know if this film is ever going to get made. But it truly deserves a new modern telling!

An abundant of X-Men news has come out this week. We will start with the absolute cheesiest and most pointless. The dumb Carls Jr. and Hardees commercials with rip off Mystique, and Quicksilver. This is some odd marketing techniques. The commercials are cheesy and dumb. As well the picture of Quicksilver released that has him running alongside the wall while Wolverine and the X-Men don’t even notice him. Again, looks cheesy, and actually even photo shopped. What is exciting is Lauren Shuler Donner has announced that they are looking at major spinoffs. She announced she wants Mystique, Gambit, and Deadpool. Too of which are expected. Deadpool we, and Ran Reynolds, have been waiting for since the X-Men franchise began. As well Mystique, of course she needs her own spin off. Not because of the character, but because of the actress, Jennifer Lawrence. But the most exciting is Gambit. We were so excited with the announcement of Gambit in Origins, and to be honest, Taylor Kitsch was a shining point in that film. And I hope that they bring him back. However, I believe that with Days of Future Past and Apocalypse are going to reset the timeline and bring the First Class characters into today’s time. I’ll be excited to see the turn out no matter what the outcome.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier(no spoilers)

Captain America is back! And this time he has a new squad of buddies. The question is, who does he trust? I really liked this film, Captain America is much different hero then you get with Thor, or Hulk, or even Iron Man. With those films you get your Destruction film, or fantasy film, or true action adventure. With the Captain, you almost get a Political Thriller, which keeps you on the edge of your seat and wanting more. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, and starring Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Robert Redford, and Samuel L Jackson. Now I’m going to get in this with everything I can and not give away any spoilers. I will put out another one next week a little more spoiler filled. I’m even going to attempt to keep down my comic loving nerdism out.

Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier sees our hero adjusting to life in this decade. We open with a pretty cool action scene that shows us that Captain Rogers has decided to stick by S.H.I.E.L.D. even though he doesn’t truly trust the secrecy. There is an attempt on Nick Fury’s life, and Captain Rogers along with The Black Widow go on the hunt for who is behind the meltdown that has become S.H.I.E.L.D.! Along the way Rogers continues to attempt to adjust, but when his past comes back in the form of The Winter Soldier.

This film does everything a sequel should. It ups the ante in action, story, and suspense. It does a very good job moving along the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It takes the Universe they have created and turns it upside making you wonder where they are going. Never once becoming predictable, or stale. The story is easy to follow, yet keeps you guessing at who to trust. My only real negative on the movie, and this could possibly be construed as a spoiler, but The Winter Soldier who the film is named after, isn’t even the main story line that runs through the film. It’s almost where if you had taken him out, Captain America would of still had quite a problem to handle! Yet it leaves wanting more of this mysterious soldier, and where they will go.

Newcomer Anthony Mackie as the Falcon is a definite plus. He is going to be a fun force to watch moving forward and I hope he gets a bigger part then the Iron Patriot/War Machine does in the Iron Man franchise. The Easter Eggs as well will knock you away if you are a comic fan and looking forward to the growth of this universe, as will the after credit scenes. Yes I said sceneS, plural, make sure you stay until the very end!

All in all I scored Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier a Jeebus score of 5.6, with a .2 for Anthony Mackie, a .1 bonus for Scarlett Johansson, and .1 bonus for an Easter egg I can’t mention, giving us a final score of 6, and the first JEEBUS-TACULAR of the year!

IT’S A RACOON WITH MACHINE GUNS!

THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY TRAILER IS HERE! I can’t tell you How excited I was for the GOTG trailer to be débuted! And James Gunn did not disappoint! The film looks like amazing! Action packed and filled with the comedy we have come to expect from the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

I was worried about the casting of Chris Pratt but over the last year or so I have become a fan of Pratt. He was the best thing that Vince Vaughn’s Delivery Man had going for it, and was phenomenal in The Lego Movie. As well I was defiantly confused at why Marvel would cast Dave Bautista as a lead in the film that will in turn, lead us into Avengers 2. But after Riddick, and this trailer, it makes a little more sense.

I get the feeling we are going to be introduced to a whole new world in the MCU. Thor started it opening up the cosmos, and now GOTG will continue on that path, which could lead us to Planet Hulk one day! All I can say, is that I am very excited, and ready for August 1!
