Batman v Superman: Dawn of Screw the Fan boys!

One of the greatest debates of all time, has, and always will be, who would win in a fight, *Insert iconic name here* and Batman. More times than not, the answer are Batman, because he is Batman. But the greatest of these arguments has always been what if the iconic name being inserted was Superman. The last son of Krypton. Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive. Able to leap a building in a single bound. Is it possible, for The Batman, a man with no powers, to defeat Superman? I have always said yes. There would be a way. And now, we finally, for the first time, see these two iconic heroes on screen together. Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice has arrived, and is here to answer the debate once and for all.

Plagued with hatred from fans from not only the polarizing ending of Man of Steel, but for the casting of Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Gal Godat as Wonder Woman, and most notably Ben Affleck as Batman, BvS has had its share of haters. Most unwarranted, seeing as none of these haters had seen the film. Disagreeing with casting is one thing, but declaring the film would be terrible because of it is another. I have disagreed with the casting of Gal Godat since the beginning, but I went into this film tonight in the hopes that she would prove me wrong. And did she? We will find out soon enough.

Batman v. Superman follows the events of Man of Steel. Fearing the actions of a Superman left unchecked, Batman takes on the man of steel, while the world wrestles with what kind of a hero it really needs. With Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman (Henry Cavill) fighting each other, a new threat, is created by Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg). It’s up to Superman and Batman to set aside their differences along with Wonder Woman (Gal Godat) to stop Luthor from unleashing certain doom across Metropolis, and the world. The film is directed by Zach Snyder and also stars Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Holly Hunter, and Jeremy Irons as Alfred.

I went in to BvS with high hopes, checking my reservations on Godat and Eisenberg at the door. And right of the bat, pun intended, I was bored as hell. The entire first hour is GAH-BAGE! It drags, and has the choppiest editing I have ever seen. We open up with the Wayne’s dying, again, and damnit, I get it, The Wayne’s died! We go into a world building scene that really did work building on the finale of Man of Steel. And that was cool, it was, but then it’s gets choppy, and has no pacing what so ever.

Zach Snyder over uses his slow motion early on, completely takes me out of the film. While they take the time to try and build the relationship between Lois and Clark, it has no heart to it. I don’t care about their relationship. Maybe it is because I just don’t like Amy Adams as Lois Lane. On the other hand, there a little sprinkle of Godat’s Wonder Woman that was done well, and the relationship between Wayne and Alfred. But no other chemistry hits.

The story itself is all over the place. It makes no sense at times, and jumps into Amazing Spider-Man ish of set ups. Some that were pretty cool, but had you scratching your head like Hot Thor Time Machine from Age of Ultron. There are plot points that seem to happen, just because, and have no real reason, or explanation.

It is not all bad however. Like I said, Batman is freaking awesome. Ben Affleck is freaking incredible and looks badass as The Bat. He is on point as Bruce Wayne, and insane as Batman. When he is not on screen I found myself waiting for him to be back. Jeremy Irons is as good as the new Alfred. Definitely a new take on the character and it works. Batman legit is a different character then we are used to. Because Batman legit murders some fools. Yes they deserve it, but he just killing folks.

I even liked Eisenberg as Luthor. He is a little out there, he is not so Gene Hackman genius mastermind Luthor, little more of “I’m crazy let’s be a bad guy” And it works a little, and perhaps it will grow into a great character. Gal Gadot is functional. They used her great, and her intro was awesome. I still don’t think she can carry her own film.

I also feel the score, was God awful. The only buts of music I enjoyed were the small samples of the Man of Steel theme, and Wonder Woman’s theme. And if you disliked all the destruction in Man of Steel, I am pretty sure Snyder is giving you the finger in this. All in all, the film needs a lot of work. Maybe the extra 30 minutes of R rated footage will improve it. However what this movie did do right is give us the best Batman I have ever seen, even if he doesn’t care about the lives of the bad guys. I’m giving it a score of 2.1 with a .4 bonus for Batman. That gives us a Jeebus Score of 2.5. But what say you Jackass Nation? What are your thoughts? Who is your favorite Batman? Sound off in the comments below, and remember, It Is What It Is!

The Jeebus Score explained

The Jeebus score is out of a possible 6 points. Films are giving a max of 1 point each for Entertainment Value, Story/Writing, Performance, Direction, and Casting. There is also a possible bonus up to .5. Any film between 2.5 and 4 is considered a good film. 4-5 is a great film. Anything over 5 is an incredibly amazing film. To get a perfect score of 6.5 a film will pretty much have to be The Empire Strikes Back or The Godfather.

Gotham Season 1 Blu Ray Review

First off Im sorry I have been slacking lately. Haven’t caught up on many films. Will be back with a review of Black Mass very soon. However, thanks to my position at Cinelinx.com, I am getting more opportunities. Recently I received a copy of Gotham Season 1 on Blu Ray from the good people over at Warner Bros. so that I can review it for all the good peeps out there. You can read my official review of Gotham on Blu Ray right here: http://www.cinelinx.com/reviews/home-entertainment/gotham-season-1.html

Or read stay here for the MoneyMan Productions version.

The official synopsis of Fox’s newest superhero drama reads as “The story behind Commissioner James Gordon’s rise to prominence in Gotham City in the years before Batman’s arrival.” At first glance that sounds awesome. The initial set up and pilot was very fun and looked promising. However the story is much different than the official synopsis would have you think. Instead of focusing on its most interesting components, Gordon, Bullock, Penguin, and Edward Nygma, it tries to throw every possible Batman reference it can at you. Going so far as to become more centered on the young Bruce Wayne.

Gotham Season 1 stars Ben McKenzie, Donald Logue, David Mazouz, Robin Lord Taylor, Erin Richards, Zabryna Guevara, Sean Pertwee, Camren Bicondova, Cory Michael Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, Victoria Cartagena, Andrew Stewart-Jones, John Doman, Morena Baccarin, and Nicholas D’Agosto. It was developed by Bruno Heller and distributed by Warner Bros Television.

Now it’s not to say Gotham is all bad. It has some very shining moments that keep me hanging on for dear life. In hopes that more of these moments will come through. The relationship and story behind young Detective Gordon and his hardened somewhat corrupt but good hearted partner Harvey Bullock is what the show needs to stay focused on. A crime drama in vain of Law & Order with these two at its center. That’s what we all thought we were getting. Season one has its ups and downs, with nearly every other episode alternating with awesome content to “hey look we have Batman and his villains!”

The story of season one follows Gordon and his rise in the ranks of the GCP fighting corruption. Corruption that includes the Commissioner in cahoots with a Mayor that works between local crime bosses Falcone and Maroni. As the war grows between these two, a young underboss Fish Mooney attempts to take control of the streets of Gotham, all while Oswald “Penguin” Cobblepot attempts to put himself in position to control Gotham. Meanwhile young Bruce Wayne tries to learn to be a man under the guidance of his legal guardian and butler Alfred Pennywise. While trying to learn the truth about the death of his parents he joins with Selina Kyle, damaged girl who lives on the streets. She tries to help Bruce all while not getting to close.

More focus needs to be placed on the characters that carry the show. Not just Gordon and Bullock. I would like to see more focus on Penguin, which they did early on, but trailed off as the season progressed. Nygma, who was used sparingly, but perfectly in the beginning, might have gotten a little over used toward the end. He is great as a minor supporting role if they keep that up. Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle is the break out star of the show. She is so good, and probably my favorite part of the series.

Sound quality on the Blu ray is great. It is very crisp and clear, weather you are watching one or all of the 22 episodes, or the special features. Even on my rather out dated and not so state of the art sound system it was beautifully done. The score is very Batman-esq and matches the season perfectly. To get technical for you, Gotham Season 1 Blu Ray has a DTS-HS Master Audio 5.1 surround track. Basically perfect for any system. The city is brought to life through the scattered sounds and scores of the background that enthrall the listener as you watch.

The visuals are just as stunning as well. Gotham has a unique palette of color to it. It is very bold and cold, and makes the brighter moments really pop. In a stunning 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video presentation, the entire series is beautifully shot and colored. It makes the city come to life; it makes the characters pop as if you were looking through your own front window watching these events unfold in front of your very own home.

The season is full of ups and downs, along with cameos from many many characters from Batman lure. As the DVD and Blu Ray of season 1 has hit the shelves now, and we gear up for Season 2 on September 21st. The DVD/Blu-ray is chocked full of extras that add to the viewing of Gotham. They include character development pieces, set designs, and how they truly brought the city of Gotham to life. The bulk of these extras are set in 4 featurettes that each breaks down into separate viewing chapters:

-Gotham Invented

-Gotham: Designing the Fiction

-The Game of Cobblepot

-Gotham: A Legend Reborn

Another extra we are privileged to is presenting not only Gotham, but CWs the Flash and Arrow, as well as the now cancelled/possibly Arrow Resurrected Constantine, DC Comics Night at Comic Con is the entire Hall H panel from San Diego Comic Con 2014. See the stars of these shows express their excitement for their shows, and a look at what was set to come.

All in all, the Blu-ray/DVD of Gotham Season 1 is a fun experience given all these extras. They definitely add to the viewing of the show over all. However, given the shaky run of the show, and its story lines, and the not so exciting look at the season to come, you might hold off on this one. Let’s see how the series pans out before we decide this is a must have for the collectors of the world. Gotham gets a TV Jeebus Score of 3.5 with a bonus of .4 for Carmen Bicondova as Selina Kyle, and for the characters of Edward Nygma and Penguin.

San Diego Comic Con Day 3

Ok, so major news Saturday out of Comic Con, I know I am two days late, but there was a lot to talk about. So without any further au due, let’s get into it.

DC opened up with nothing but Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. No rumored Shazaam info, no rumored schedule. Just pictures, and footage. The footage which is unable to be seen by anyone not at Comic Con, which is crap. But, I have a slight description. The footage allegedly opened up in Gotham, Supes is hovering in the air then on comes the Bat Signal. He glances down and it reveals Batman on a rooftop. Batman’s eyes glow blue revealing him to be in his tech armor, very reminiscent of Frank Miller’s the Dark Knight Returns. Supes eyes glow red and he flares up toward Batman and the footage ends. The film seems to take a lot of its cues from the graphic novel, which I think is a great idea. If you’ve read the novel The Dark Knight Returns or seen the animated film, you know how detailed and incredible that story is. From the announcement of the film with the quote from the graphic novel to this test footage, it’s been pretty clear what direction they are taking it. I for one am still not 100% onboard. I think Bat-Fleck is the best thing going for the film but it has its issues. The casting of Mamoa as Aquaman, great casting, but putting Aquaman in the film, unnecessary. Same with Victor Stone, AKA Cyborg. And for Wonder Woman, the casting of Gal Godat is horrendous. They have finally released an image of her, and yes, the costume looks phenomenal. Yes she is very hot. But I don’t by her as Wonder Woman. Yes she was in the Iraqi army, she just too skinny. Not to mention, she is not an actress. She is a model who acts. If you didn’t care to have a trained actress play the most iconic female superhero ever, why would not just get Gina Carano? That’s just my 2 cents. Facebook-20140728-012253 Facebook-20140728-012328 Facebook-20140728-012357 Facebook-20140728-012414

Next up we had Legendary. Legendary had two pretty big major announcements. Godzilla 2 will include more of our favorite monsters. Mothra, Rodan, and King Gidorah, AKA Monster Zero. I was in the camp of the not so thrilled with Godzilla. I felt they needed much more Godzilla in the Godzilla film. However, with the introduction of these three iconic monsters, I am back on board. Will they let me down? That remains to be seen. I will say though, historically, sequels give you more of what you want. Batman Returns more Batman, Terminator 2, more Terminator. So I assume that Godzilla 2, will give us more Godzilla. On a possibly related note. Legendary and Universal will be teaming up to give us what a teaser called Skull Island. Skull Island the legendary home of the iconic King Kong. Rumor has it that the film will give us an origin of Kong. How he back King of this island and the islanders began to worship him. As well that it will be taking place within the Godzilla universe. If this is true, it makes me even more excited that we could get King Kong Vs Godzilla later on down the road!

Warner Brothers also released a trailer and new poster for Mad Max: Fury Road. The film looks fun, Tom Hardy plays the title character and is definitely a good successor for Mel Gibson. It looks action packed, it looks like them going back and taking their time really paid off for them. I cannot wait to see this film!

WB also aired the Pilots of both Flash and Gotham. While most people have already seen the Flash pilot, The Gotham pilot was aired for the first time. Reception seems to be pretty positive. It is said to be much grounded in reality. Not being a Superhero television show, but a cop drama. Even characters like Robin Taylor’s Oswald Cobblepot, and Corey Michael Smith’s Edward Nygma are believable. The Arrow panel seemed to be the most fun with them showing an extended trailer for season 3. Looks like we will be upping the action and drama. Ra’s Al Ghul will apparently be making his long anticipated debut. They spoke of the crossovers that will take place between Flash and Arrow. Most notably Felicity’s presence on both show. The Constantine panel answered a few questions and also showed an extended trailer. Needless to say, DC is on top of their TV game.

I don’t know if there was a full panel, or not but at some point this weekend this image of The Thing pre CGI from the Fantastic FOur reboot surfaced. Looks about the same as The Hulk from the Avenges. First bit of good news in a while coming out of this film. Facebook-20140728-012312

Finally, the bread and butter, the winner of Comic Con, in my opinion. All though they did not announce any of their untitled projects, Marvel did give us a lot. Evangeline Lily will be playing Hope Van Dyne, daughter of Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym. Will probably be Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang’s love interest. Corey Stoll will be replacing Patrick Wilson as Darren Cross AKA Yellowjacket. Plot seems to revolve around Pym and Cross being business partners. The Ying and Yang of the business. Cross seems to be the one who wants to take the company in an evil direction while Pym is out to help mankind. Seems as Pym will recruit Lang to take his place and become the Ant Man.

Marvel brought out the Avengers and they answered some fun questions. Hemsworth was asked where he would like them to take Thor, to which he replied “I’d like to see them turn him into a woman”. Ruffalo joked about how he used to be nobody now he walks down the street and has a name, everyone yells “Hi Hulk”. All he pieces of the puzzle have been released and they create an amazing picture of the Avengers all being over powered by Ultron Drones. Most notably The Vision appears in the background in the top left corner. Finally they showed some footage. Do you remember the photo released a about a week ago with the Avengers all hanging out in plain clothes in Avengers Tower? Well the apparently the footage opened up there will all the Avengers joking and hanging around trying to pick up Mjolnir. Stark can’t do it, not even with an Iron Man glove or help from Rhodey, Banner can’t move, then Cap steps up to the plate and it budges just a little and they all go nuts. That is until a ruffling is heard and out walks a damaged Iron Man suit, that begins to speak of the extinction of the human race, and that he is the Ultron. A montage of action footage rolls, including Black Widow in her new outfit, Banner in a strait jacket, tanks being thrown. The footage ends with the Avengers laid out in a desolate desert. The Hulk raging out, then in comes Iron Man, in the Hulk Buster gear. The two go at it and the footage ends. I don’t know about you, but just the mere thought of how this looked gives me Goosebumps. I am so excited for next year!

To end Marvels panel they brought out James Gunn who revealed that Guardians 2 is coming. Says a lot for the studio to green light the film before the first has even been released. Guardians of the Galaxy is my most anticipated film of the year and I cannot wait to see it this Thursday night!!!!
