Get Out

Every August I begin my horror movie marathon. Where I watch over 90 horror films that I own. It is roughly three months of me being terrified. Outside of that marathon I am not much of a horror movie watcher. So nine times out of ten, I don’t go see the new horror films.  But with such hype and excitement around Get Out I decided I could not miss this one.

Get Out is the directorial debut of Jordan Peele of Key and Peele fame. The film stars Daniel Kaluuya, Catherine Keener, Allison Williams, Bradley Whitford and Caleb Landry Jones, and follows a young interracial couple who visit the mysterious estate of the girl’s parents.

First off, I am going to tell you right now, after seeing this movie, I have made the conscience decision to never, ever, ever, meet another girls parents. Ever. I am out. I got out. Out. Because this is absolutely creepy as hell, and incredible to watch! And I totally get the name, because all movie long I was screaming, “Bro! Get Out!” Jordan Peele has legit had his coming out party to the world of directing.

Everyone in the film is incredible. Most notably Daniel Kaluuya in the starring role. This guy is talented, and cannot wait to see where he goes next! Allison Williams is also great, and will definitely be a lock for next years That Bitch Cray in the Jeebus Awards! They had such great chemistry together, that it added to the creepiness of the overall film. It was also awesome to see Banshee in another film. Caleb Landry Jones is a great actor, and I love when he pops up in the films.

While Kaluuya is a break out of the film, he is definitely not the only break out. Lil Rel Howery is incredible. In a horror film, there’s not normally the comedic relief, or at least a large part being the comedic relief. But Howery was really good, and extremely funny. He serves as the audiences surrogate into his world, and pretty much says what’s on our mind. Not to mention that even though this could have taken you out of the film, the comedy fit perfectly.

Peele did a great job mixing the horror and suspense with a little sprinkle of comedy that gave you enough to relax. I am very excited to see what he does next. As far as this goes, Get Out is incredible. I am giving it a Jeebus Score of 3.5! Are you excited about seeing Get Out this weekend? Any terrible stories meeting your significant others parents? Sound off in the comments below! And remember, It Is What It Is!

The Jeebus Score explained

The Jeebus score is out of a possible 5 points with a .5 bonus. Films are giving a max of 1 point each for Entertainment Value, Story/Writing, Performance, Direction, and Production. There is also a possible bonus up to .5. Any film between 2.5 and 4 is considered a good film. 4-5 is a great film. Anything over 5 is an incredibly amazing film. To get a perfect score of 5.5 a film will pretty much have to be The Empire Strikes Back or The Godfather.

Everything Batman is still Awesome

Everything was awesome back when The Lego Movie hit theaters in 2014. When the announcement was first made that a movie was being made based on the Lego Brand, most were pretty skeptical. It wasn’t until the first reviews started coming out that people began to by in. Almost immediately it became a hit. It is a film that I truly believe was snubbed by the Academy Awards, not getting a nomination. Not only did The Lego Movie deserve a nomination, I contend that it deserved to win.

Off all the greatness that was The Lego Movie, one of the breakout characters was definitely Will Arnett’s Batman. He was incredible! Arguably one of the best on screen Batmen we have ever gotten! From Will Arnett’s voice work, down to the characters persona, he was a great. It didn’t take long for WB to announce The Lego Batman spinoff. This worried me. Was this character the way they wrote it able to carry his own film? Aside from the recent Nolan Films, and the original 1989 take on Batman, WB has had a bit of trouble getting The Batman to work. Well, The Lego Batman works. Works so well that it might be one of the best Batman films we have ever gotten.

The Lego Batman Movie is directed by Chris McKay, and written by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. It stars Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Zach Galifianakis, Rosario Dawson, and Ralph Fiennes. With Mariah Carey, Jenny Slate, Billy Dee Williams, Hector Elizondo, Conan O’Brian, Jason Mantzoukas, Doug Benson, Zoe Kravitz, Kate Micucci, Riki Lindhome, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Adam DeVine, Eddie Izzard, Seth Green, Jemaine Clement, Ellie Kemper, and Chris Hardwick.  Seriously, that is the cast list. Most of them have small one liners or so, but still one hell of a cast.

The film follows Arnett’s Batman as he is the loner hero in Gotham city. After he takes down and saves Gotham for the millionth time The Joker (Zalifianakis) realizes that Batman doesn’t appreciate their rivalry and decided he has to show Batman that he needs him. Thus sending Batman on a journey to come to peace with the fact that he is lonely, and he needs people in his life, and that he can’t do everything alone.

First off, the film does what The Lego Movie did so well by mixing a tremendous amount of heart with a fun ride.  They are almost on Pixar level with their emotions, not to the point that The Lego Movies are going to make you cry, but they definitely hit you with the feels. You can relate to the characters despite the outlandish and over the top attitudes and characterizations. The Story itself is a basic story, but they play it out so well that feels special and different.

On top of all the feels and emotions, this film is funny. I literally walked out, and my face was hurting from laughing and smiling so much. There are not a lot of downtimes in the film. They pretty much hit you hard with the jokes as the film begins, even before the studio logo’s even hit. Then they don’t really slow down. There may be a small stretch in the middle where the film kind of loses its footing drags for a moment, but it quickly catches itself back up and keeps hitting. It never ceases to be funny.

The animation is once again beautiful. I love this near stop motion look that Lego films are giving us. They use a lot of dark colors, seeing as Batman only deals in black and sometimes very very very dark grey. So with the colors they use for Batman, the Bat Cave, and Gotham city, they mix perfectly with the few bright colors that really pop as well. This animation is absolutely incredible!

Like I said this cast is absolutely incredible. Even as a few are just cameos and maybe one liners or so. But everyone fits their voice perfectly, and does a great job to bring these characters to life. Will Arnett has a great grasp on this characters voice. I hesitate to call him one of the best Batmen of time, but he does rival some of the greats. Galifianakis’ Joker is a very good Joker. Not up to the level of Mark Hamill, but still a good rendition of the clown prince of crime. Hearing Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill return for minor cameos as Superman and Green Lantern had me rolling, just having those two voice these guys is great.

As for negatives, like I said the film does have a little bit of a down time in the second act, it wasn’t too slow to really take you out, and they continued to hit you with jokes so it still flowed. While we are on the concept of the jokes, they are all hilarious, and for the most part completely hit. The Problem with the jokes are that they come so quick, so fast, that you are still laughing at 2 jokes before trying to catch up with the one you are on.

All in all The Lego Batman Movie is great! From the cast to the animation everything in this film is on point. They do a great job at poking fun of the history and lore of Batman. From BvS, to the Nolan Verse, to Schumacher and Adam West. There is even a brief joke about the 1940s Black and White serial. They even hit on the suicide squad and Marvel! The music is once again fun and catchy, not as catchy as Everything Is Awesome, but still great!

It’s a film that can hit all ages! Kids and adults alike. I gave it a score of 3.7, definitely one you are going to want to go out and see as soon as you can. I’d also give it a .5 bonus if I could for the jokes on the nostalgia as well as the awesome cameos! Great cast, great animation, all an all-around heartfelt joy to watch, that you’ll want to see over and over again, even if just to catch the jokes you missed! Are you excited for The Lego Batman Movie? Who is your favorite Batman? Sound off in the comments below! And remember, It Is What It Is!

Patriots Day

In 2013 during The Boston Marathon, the longest running marathon in the United States, tragedy struck. Multiple explosions rocked the racers and bystanders near the finish line. Rather than flee, the city of Boston sprung to action. Went to help, not away. Patriots Day, the newest film from director Peter Berg tells the stories of many of the true to life individuals that were involved in this incident. The city wide man hood that too place over 4 days, and the events that lead to phenomenon that is, Boston Strong.

Patriots day stars Mark Wahlberg, J. K. Simmons, John Goodman, Kevin Bacon, Alex Wolff, Themo Melikidze, Melissa Benoist, Jimmy O. Yang and Michelle Monaghan. For the most part the film follows behind Wahlberg as Boston Police Department Sergeant Tommy Saunders, who was a fictional character inserted into the film that revolves around the true to life events. Most of the other cast members do play true characters, and the film does an incredible job paying tribute to those we lost, and those who injured on that fateful day.

The film is shot beautifully as well. They did an incredible job not only bringing to life the city of Boston, but making it a true character in the film. It felt real, it felt legit. It made me want to be a part of that city. Not to mention Berg shot a lot of the film in a way that made it seem like actual news footage or security footage from the day of the race.

The cast was done put together perfectly. As the film ends you see the true characters and through my eyes full of tears, their actor counterparts were incredible. Not to mention the talent behind the cast. You have your heavy hitters, John Goodman and JK Simmons. And then you have your stars Like Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan. Who you know is going to turn in great performances. It is what they do. But even relative new comers Alex Wolff, Themo Melikidze, and to me the show stealer Jimmy O. Yang, have come to play. Yang plays Dun Meng, a civilian who was kidnapped and carjacked by the bombers. He brings heart, and even a good bit of comedic timing to the role.

The score is also incredible. Put together by who can now be considered a veteran of the industry, Trent Reznor. The music really adds to the intense overtones of the film. From the opening moment of the film you are on the edge of your seat. No there’s no opening action sequence that pulls you in, it’s the drama and intensity brought together by Berg’s direction mixed with Reznor’s score. Even as you just learning who these characters are, the tension builds.

I was brought to tears multiple times throughout the film. Whether it is the situation itself, the portrayal of the bravery showed by this city in tragedy, or the intensity of what I was seeing. The perfect mixture of action, comedy and heart brings us another incredible film to close out the year of 2016. The fear was that it was entirely too soon for this film to hit theaters. With less than 4 years removed from the tragic event, but personally I believe we needed this film. It shows the support and love that we are all capable of if we just ban together.  The heart and bravery portrayed on screen is incredible. In the time we live in, it is good to remember that there are good people out there. Good cops. That when it all works the way it is supposed to, we, as Americans, are capable of great fetes.

Patriots Day is a true tale of the brave people who did extraordinary things to bring two cowardly terrorist to justice. It pays tribute, and legitimately tells an inspiring story in our darkest hours we are able to rise above. The cast amazing and well put together. Anchored by an award winning caliber performance by Mark Wahlberg. Wahlberg turns in his best yet, which is hard to do after his performance in Deepwater Horizon earlier this year. The story is intense and incredible. With the right amount of humor sprinkled in, the film captures the perfect mixture between action and drama. I gave Patriots Day a 4.1 overall. But I am giving it a .4 Jeebus bonus for the true to life badassness shown by these characters, and the inspiration behind them. Boston Strong. Patriots Day, a 4.5. What say you Jackass Nation? Sound off in the comments and let us know, are you excited for Patriots Day? What is your favorite Mark Wahlberg film?

Silence

Martin Scorsese has given us some of the greatest films of all time. Each movie he makes feels like a true event. The excitement that builds for each installment in his filmography is unparalleled! I find myself dying in anticipation for The Irishman. Luckily I was given the opportunity to see his newest film, Silence. And clocking in at just a tad less than 3 hours, it is an epic tale, but as always, it is a film that keeps you locked in, until the final frame.

Silence stars Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, Liam Neeson, Tadanobu Asano and Ciarán Hinds. Directed by the one and only Martin Scorsese it tells the tale of two 17th century Jesuit priests from Portugal who travel to Japan to spread their word and look for a rumored fallen priests who had mentored them. Upon entering the country they learn of the hardships it will take to keep their faith, and set the example for those who a Christians in a time and place where they persecuted for their beliefs.

The story is absolutely incredible, and plays out wonderfully. It is an adaptation of Shūsaku Endō’s novel of the same name. It is hard to watch at times to see what these men went through for their faith and their beliefs. But it perfectly paced throughout its two hour and forty one minute runtime. Scorsese has a talent for making this films fly by. You never feel the weight of the film as you are truly engaged to everything playing out on screen.

While Scorsese can be felt throughout the film, it not your average Marty Scorsese film. There’s not De Nero, no Pacino, no DiCaprio. The editing is different, it feels different. Scorsese has said that this film was a passion project of his for over 25 years. He felt he wasn’t ready to make it until now. I couldn’t be happier of the time he took to develop it. The cinematography is absolutely stunning. It is a beautifully shot film. Marty is joined by once again by his Wolf of Wall Street cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto. Who does a phenomenal job bringing this film to life?

Everyone in this film is absolutely incredible. From Yōsuke Kubozuka, all the way up to Andrew Garfield. Kubozuka makes up for the majority of a comedy in the film. The character is well written and performed perfectly. Adam Driver as well is proving while he is a force to be reckoned with. Liam Neeson does an awesome as only Liam Neeson can do. But by the far, the stand out of this film is Andrew Garfield. Garfield turns in his second Oscar caliber performance of the year, and if he does not get nominated for one of his 2016 films it will truly be a travesty.

Honestly Silence is pretty damn enthralling. From its performances, to the story, to the absolutely stunning cinematography. Scorsese has always had such a talent in making films, and his ability to make such epics, that feel like they run so quickly. A departure from his norm, but still a Scorsese feel to it. I’m giving Silence a score of 4.4, and a Jeebus Bonus of .4 for Garfield’s performance. That gives us a Jeebus Score of 4.8! But what say you Jackass Nation? What is your favorite Martin Scorsese film? Are you excited for Silence? Sound off in the comments below! And remember, It Is What It Is!
