Seventh layer of hell for movies, or the Seventh Son. Whatever.

I am seriously ready for summer. I wasn’t out of this terrible time for film. Seventh Son stars Jeff Bridges, Ben Barnes, Alicia Vikander, Kit Harington, Olivia Williams, Antse Traue, Djimon Hounson and Julianne Moore. It is directed by Sergei Bodrov, and based on the book The Spook’s Apprentice by Joseph Delaney. It is a fantasy film that, really just doesn’t deliver. The film is about Master Gregory (Bridges) who is an exorcist of witches and spirits in middle ages and takes on an apprentice (Barnes) to fight the Queen of all Witches (Moore).

Again we will go with the positives of the film first. Jeff Bridges is a lot of fun. His character is major bad A, and raging drunk. It makes for a lot of fun interactions between him and other characters. He has this Ogre that runs around with him as a sort of sidekick. You feel bad for this Ogre because Gregory is always calling him ugly and Lucky but Loyal. But he’s still fun to watch. The CGI while not as stunning as its opening weekend competition Jupiter Ascending is also very seamless. The dragons, and monsters, and witches are pretty cool.

Djimon Hounson steals the show when he is on screen. Not because his character is so good, he’s pretty basic. And not at all because the story is set to make it so. It is just because Hounson demands your attention when he is onscreen. No matter what the film, or who the character is. I am such a fan of this guy, and am always excited to see him on screen.

The story is pretty basic, and the films name change is a little misleading. Sure it is kind of the story of Barnes’ Thomas Ward, but it more on the shoulders of Bridges’ character. There is a minor Romeo & Juliette type love story between Ward and a witch’s daughter (Vikander) that feels a little out of place at most points. The direction is all over the place, unable to really pick a lane to drive in. Are they trying to make it Ward’s story, is it about this young witches daughter? Is the story of Master Gregory?

All in all Seventh Son is just another throw away garbage film in February. At least next week we will get Kingsmen which I am legitimately excited for. But back to the topic at hand, I’m giving Seventh Son a Jeebus Score of 2. But what say you Jackass Nation. Have you seen Seventh Son? Do you plan to? What are some of your favorite Fantasy films? Sound off in the comments below!

The Jeebus score is out of a possible 6 points. Films are giving a max of 1 point each for Acting, Entertainment, and Casting, and a max of .5 for Dialog, Cinematography, and Direction. There is also a possible bonus up to .5. Any film between 2.5 and 4 is considered a good film. 4-5 is a great film. Anything over 5 is an incredibly amazing film. To get a perfect score of 6 a film will pretty much have to be The Godfather.
