3 Days to Kill

So on the surface, 3 Days to Kill looks like your average Hitman/Federal Agent wants to retire home with this family but gets pulled back for one more job type of flick. However it is much much more! It’s a feel good family film, a rom-com, an action film, and psychological thriller mixed with Bruce Banner syndrome. all jumbled together in the way that only McG could bring it to us! Good news, despite the jumpy and shaky story, er stories, its actual not terrible!

I know “not terrible” doesn’t make it sound good, but to be honest its a fun film. The film opens with a very well done action sequence setting up Costner’s character Ethan(no not Hunt). Here we meet the generic bad guys that you look at and say, “yep, that’s the bad guy’. From here the film goes on to about 30 different stories that jump around in the most eccentric way. First he learns he is dyeing of cancer, and then that he has a random family living in his Paris home. He has to take the time he has left to reconnect with his estranged wife and daughter. But oh wait, the CIA wants him back for one last job, and they have the cure for his cancer. However he has to keep his heart rate down, and to do that what’s his trick? Learned from Bruce Banner and is always angry? No! Its vodka! Vodka calms him!And then, comedy, randomness, heartfelt moments, and action ensues.

Kevin Costner seems to be on the comeback trail, even if Hollywood wants to put hurdles like McG and Jack Ryan in his way. Costner plays the role with right amount of Badass mixed with subtle comedy. He is undeniably the best part of the film. Hailed Seinfeld plays Costner daughter and where you would expect a lackluster father/daughter bonding situation, is actually a well written, and very loving sub plot. There is also a sub plot involving a family of, squatters, living in Costner’s apartment that for some reason in Paris it is illegal to kick intruders out of you home until spring…… however this sub plot makes for some good comedy.

Amber Heard plays the most random character in the film. Is she good, is she bad, is she crazy? Who cares, she’s hot. Amber Heard is Costner’s CIA boss, for lack of a better word. And she is 6 ways of crazy, and honestly I dig it. However I’ll buy Amber Heard in any role, even this poorly written and completely out-of-place character.

There are some moments in the film that you sit back and go “who the hell wrote this and whats wrong with them” then you realize, oh yes, McG put this together…… All in all tho, I have to give 3 Days to Kill a 3.3, with .2 bonus for Amber Heard being hot, bringing the total Jeebus score to 3.5, Check Out the Matinee!
